Canada v Qatar prediction, lineups & tips: World Cup 2026 Group B

Canada need a win to seize Group B's initiative at BC Place on Thursday, but stand-in captain Stephen Eustáquio says this one feels like 'life or death'. Qatar surprised Switzerland and will not roll over.

Canada arrive at BC Place having already learned a harsh lesson about wasted chances at the FIFA World Cup 2026. A dominant 1-1 draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina in Toronto, 61% possession, 13 shots, 1.23 expected goals, left Jesse Marsch's side level with every other team in Group B after one match. Thursday's game against Qatar is, in blunt terms, the one they cannot afford to drop.

Campaign context

Group B is as open as any in the tournament. Switzerland sit top on goal difference after a 1-1 draw with Qatar, while Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina are also on one point apiece. All four sides have played one game.

For Canada, the co-hosts, the arithmetic is straightforward. Win here and they move to four points with a favourable final fixture against Switzerland still to come, almost certainly enough to advance. Draw or lose, and the pressure on that Switzerland game becomes enormous. Stand-in captain Stephen Eustáquio spelled it out at a press conference on Tuesday: "This is a matter of life or death for us. When we're competing, we're not just here to spend our time, we want to win, we want to make history."

Qatar's situation is only marginally less pressing. The 2022 hosts lost all three of their group games on home soil and scored just one goal across that campaign. They have qualified for this tournament under their own steam and earned a creditable 1-1 draw against Switzerland on Matchday 1, rescuing a point via a 94th-minute own goal after surviving a barrage that produced 3.2 xG against them. A point from this game would represent genuine progress; three points would transform their tournament.

Form and call-ups

Canada's opener highlighted both the quality and the frustration in Marsch's squad. They created enough to win but converted just one of their 13 attempts, with Jonathan David particularly wasteful. Cyle Larin came off the bench to score the equaliser with a fine 78th-minute strike and will push for a start in Vancouver.

Qatar were outplayed by Switzerland for much of their game in Santa Clara, facing 26 attacks that generated 3.2 xG, yet Mahmoud Abunada produced a outstanding display in goal, stopping nine targeted efforts, to keep them in contention before Miro Muheim's own goal rescued a draw. Julen Lopetegui made second-half adjustments, pushing the backline higher and asking his midfield to press more aggressively, and his side finished the stronger. Akram Afif, top scorer at the 2023 Asian Cup, remains without a World Cup goal but is the one player in Qatar's side with the craft to hurt Canada on the counter.

Manager quote

After Canada's draw with Bosnia, Marsch was candid about his side's profligacy. "I told them we've got to learn these lessons and we've got to learn them quick," he said. "We still have everything in hand, but we have to make sure the next performance is a reflection and a learning point from what we did today."

Marsch had previously set out his ambitions for the group with characteristic directness, telling GiveMeSport: "We want to win the group. For a country that has never won a World Cup game or even a point, that is a crazy statement, but I think, internally, our expectations are that at home we can be the aggressor against whoever we play."

match result: canada to win

Canada were the better side in their opener and should convert more of their chances here. Qatar's defensive display against Switzerland was genuinely impressive, but they were under siege for much of that game and their 0.6 xG output suggests limited attacking threat. At home in Vancouver, in front of a packed BC Place and with David and Larin fit, Canada should get over the line, though a clean sheet looks less likely given Qatar's late-game resilience and Afif's ability on the counter.

TIP 01✗ Miss

Correct Score: 2-1

Canada have the attacking quality to score twice at home in Vancouver, and Qatar, who equalised in the 94th minute against Switzerland, have shown they can find a late goal. A 2-1 scoreline reflects a competitive contest where the hosts' greater quality tells in the end. At around 13/2, it is the most realistic high-scoring Canada win on offer given both sides' opener results.

TIP 02✗ Miss

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Canada's only World Cup 2026 game so far ended 1-1, well under the 2.5 total, while Qatar's draw with Switzerland also ended 1-1. Qatar averaged just 0.6 xG in that game and kept their shape deep, limiting Switzerland to one converted chance. With Qatar likely to sit in and counter, the total is more likely to stay tight than to burst open. Under 2.5 at Evens is the right read given the data from both teams' openers.

TIP 03✗ Miss

Both Teams to Score: Yes

Qatar scored in both of their last two games when scoring the opening goal, and Akram Afif is a genuine match-winner capable of a moment from nothing. Canada have not kept a single clean sheet in their one World Cup 2026 fixture to date. If Qatar sit deep and hit on the break through Afif or Abdurisag, conceding to the hosts while nicking a goal of their own is a credible scenario. Both teams to score at around 6/4 has some appeal.

TIP 04✓ Hit

Anytime Goalscorer: Jonathan David

Jonathan David scored eight goals and provided five assists for Juventus in Serie A this season and is Canada's primary attacking focal point. He was wasteful against Bosnia, Canada created 1.23 xG with David leading the line, but he is too good a finisher for that to continue. Qatar conceded in both of their last two World Cup group games they played, and David is the most dangerous forward on the pitch. Both previous goals in the 2022 friendly against Qatar also came from Canada's centre-forwards.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Double Chance: Home or Draw

Canada are strongly favoured at home, playing in front of a partisan Vancouver crowd and ranked 34 places above Qatar by FIFA. The bookmakers reflect this, pricing a home win at 4/7. Even if Canada fail to convert their chances as efficiently as the xG suggests they should, a draw remains a credible floor. The double chance at 2/25 essentially insures against a freak Qatar result.

Canada at home, with David and Larin fit and playing in front of a sellout BC Place, should beat a Qatar side that conceded 3.2 xG against Switzerland. This anchors the builder, everything else in the three legs is conditional on Canada winning, so the result must be the foundation leg.

Both Teams to Score
29/20

A Canada win does not require a clean sheet, and Qatar showed against Switzerland that they can threaten late. Combining BTTS Yes with a home win points directly at a 2-1 or similar scoreline. It avoids the correlation problem of pairing the result with Over 2.5 Goals, since BTTS Yes is compatible with a 2-1 final score that stays under the 2.5 total.

Jonathan David
✓ Hit
Anytime Goalscorer
6/5

Selecting David as anytime scorer completes the three legs without direct correlation to either the result or the BTTS market. If Canada win and both teams score, there is a strong probability David is involved given he led the line in the opener and is Canada's most prolific attacker. The leg adds meaningful value to the builder at odds around 6/5.
