Canada walk into the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 on Saturday having never been here before. The co-hosts squeezed through Group B in second place, needing Stephen Eustaquio's late winner against South Africa to book their place in the last 16 for the first time in the country's history. Waiting for them at NRG Stadium in Houston is a Morocco side that has been to this stage before and done considerably more damage, the Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals in Qatar in 2022, and they arrive here having just knocked out the Netherlands on penalties in a bruising contest in Monterrey.

Canada finished Group B with four points, winning two and losing one, their sole defeat a 2-1 reverse against Switzerland. The group opener, a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, showed some vulnerability. Then came the 6-0 demolition of Qatar, which was the pick of their results and briefly made Canada look like potential dark horses. The Switzerland loss brought them back to earth. Jesse Marsch's side scrambled through with a 1-0 win over South Africa, with Alphonso Davies coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes in his first competitive appearance since March 2025, after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Marsch was measured in his pre-match press conference, refusing to frame this fixture as revenge for the 2022 group-stage defeat. "I don't believe that in this life or in this sport you can rely on the idea of revenge," the Canada head coach said. "Our focus is on preparing appropriately for the opponent we will face."

Morocco come into this on a three-match winning run in the World Cup, having drawn their opener 1-1 with Brazil before winning each of their remaining group games. They beat Scotland 1-0 and then defeated Haiti 4-2 before the Netherlands test. That 1-1 draw after extra time, Morocco equalised through Issa Diop's stoppage-time header after Cody Gakpo had put the Dutch ahead, ended in a 3-2 penalty shootout win, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saving the decisive kick from Crysencio Summerville. Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi reserved particular praise for Canada. "Canada is a very difficult team; we must be at our best," he said ahead of Saturday's game, describing them as "one of the tournament's strongest teams" for their tactical discipline.

Ouahbi also addressed questions about Brahim Diaz, who has yet to replicate his Africa Cup of Nations form. "It is true he has not reached his AFCON level, but I don't only judge him by goals or assists," Ouahbi said. "He has played a lot, he has already provided two decisive assists, and I hope he scores goals in this World Cup."

Canada have averaged 2.25 goals scored per game at this World Cup while conceding just 0.75 per game. Their expected goals against figure of 0.6 per match points to a backline that is genuinely difficult to break down. Morocco, however, have averaged 1.75 goals per game in open play and carry a particular threat from wide, with Achraf Hakimi bombing forward from right-back. The Atlas Lions also have Ismael Saibari in fine form, it was he who scored the winning penalty in Monterrey, and Marsch has openly acknowledged the challenge, describing Morocco as "a well-organised team with incredible individual talents."

Canada have used a 4-4-2 formation for all four of their World Cup matches and Marsch is unlikely to deviate here. Davies, now fit, should start at left-back. Morocco line up in their customary 4-2-3-1, with Hakimi at right-back and Sofyan Amrabat expected to anchor the midfield alongside Azzedine Ounahi. Whether Hakim Ziyech or Saibari lines up behind the striker remains the one tactical question for Ouahbi.

match result: morocco to win

Morocco's quality in wide areas, their composure in knockout football, as demonstrated against the Netherlands, and their 2022 head-to-head win over Canada all point the same way. Canada have made genuine strides under Marsch and the return of Davies adds pace and quality at left-back, but this is a step up from South Africa and Switzerland. Morocco have the better individual talent, the better record in elimination games and the psychological edge that comes from having been here before. Expect Ouahbi's side to edge a tight, low-scoring contest.

Correct Score: 0-2

Morocco have kept clean sheets in 1 of their 4 games and conceded an average of 1.0 per game, but Canada's defence has been stout, conceding just 3 in the group stage. A 0-2 scoreline reflects the pattern of Morocco controlling without Canada finding a way through. The Atlas Lions scored twice in the dying stages of games across the group stage, and their counter-attacking edge through Hakimi and Rahimi gives them the tools to punish Canada on the break. At around 17/2, this has value for the dedicated punter.

TIP 02✗ Miss

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Neither side has gone over 2.5 goals in more than 1 of their 4 World Cup matches this tournament. Canada's xG against is 0.6 per game and Morocco's is 0.67, making this the tightest defensive matchup of the round of 16 so far. Both teams score early and efficiently rather than in high-volume bursts, under 2.5 goals has landed in all four Morocco games and three of Canada's four. At 8/13, this is an odds-on shot firmly grounded in the numbers.

TIP 03✓ Hit

Both Teams to Score: No

Canada have conceded in 2 of their 4 World Cup games and kept clean sheets in the other 2. Morocco's average goals against away from home this tournament is 0.7 per game. Knockout football, especially between one team making a debut in the last 16 and another that went deep in 2022, tends to tighten tactically. Canada's best hope of staying in the game is keeping it clean. At 7/4, BTTS No is a credible pick.

TIP 04✗ Miss

Anytime Goalscorer: Achraf Hakimi

Hakimi is one of the most attacking full-backs in world football and has been an attacking force throughout this tournament. Morocco scored in the first 15 minutes of two of their group games and their best chances have often originated down Hakimi's right flank. He also stepped up in the penalty shootout against the Netherlands. At 5/1, he offers value as a contributing goal threat from deep.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Draw No Bet: Away

Morocco at 5/4 on Draw No Bet offers a safety net if the game ends level and goes to extra time or penalties, where Bounou's record speaks for itself. The Atlas Lions are unbeaten in all four games, have the better squad depth and the superior knockout experience from the 2022 run to the semi-finals. Canada are a fine tournament side, but the level steps up here. Draw No Bet away is the headline value in this fixture.

Match Result
3/4

Morocco winning in 90 minutes is the anchor leg. Their unbeaten group record, 2022 knockout experience and superior squad depth all point to them progressing. This is the result leg that underpins the other two, if Morocco win, the under 2.5 line and the clean sheet both become more likely given how they tend to manage games when ahead.

Over 2.5 Goals
3/5

Pairing Morocco to win with under 2.5 goals is logical rather than correlated, Morocco have won 3 games this tournament and all three finished with 2 goals or fewer. Canada's defensive structure, averaging just 0.75 goals conceded per game in the group stage, makes a high-scoring game unlikely even if Morocco do dominate. This leg strengthens the bet builder by favouring a controlled Morocco victory rather than a shootout.

Achraf Hakimi
✗ Miss
Anytime Goalscorer
5/1

Adding Hakimi as anytime scorer completes the builder from a different market and boosts the overall return without requiring a big-game speculative pick. He is Morocco's most threatening attacking outlet from right-back, has taken penalties, and Canada's left flank, even with Davies back, will face a stern test from a player who operates for Inter Milan at the highest level. This leg is the value enhancer in the combination.
