Uruguay v Spain prediction, lineups & tips: Group H decider at Estadio Akron

Spain need only a point to top Group H. Uruguay need a result to be sure of progressing without relying on Cape Verde slipping up. The only meeting of two former world champions in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage has plenty riding on it.

The only clash of former FIFA World Cup winners in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup arrives on Saturday morning at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, and it carries knockout implications for both sides. Spain head into this Group H decider having already half-booked their place in the Round of 32. Uruguay, two-time world champions who lifted the trophy in 1930 and 1950, face the very real prospect of a second consecutive group-stage exit if they cannot get a result.

Spain sit top of Group H on four points after a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde on matchday one and a ruthless 4-0 dismissal of Saudi Arabia on matchday two. Luis de la Fuente's side need just a point here to secure first place, though Cape Verde could theoretically overhaul them on goal difference if they beat Saudi Arabia by five or more in the simultaneous fixture. In practice, the group is Spain's to lose.

Uruguay arrive in a different kind of trouble. Marcelo Bielsa's side were held 1-1 by Saudi Arabia on the opening matchday before a chaotic 2-2 against Cape Verde on matchday two, a game in which an Olivera own goal gifted the debutants a leveller. Two points from two games leaves them second, level on points with Cape Verde, and in need of at least a draw to give themselves any realistic chance of advancing. A win would seal second place outright; a draw leaves their fate partly dependent on Cape Verde's result against Saudi Arabia.

Spain's numbers at this tournament are striking. They have conceded no goals across their two group games, averaging 2.0 goals scored per match, and their expected-goals-against figure across those matches stands at just 0.17, the mark of a backline that has barely been tested. Uruguay have been the opposite: dominant in possession, averaging 66 per cent across their two games and putting up an xG of 2.02 in the process, yet they have shipped three goals and kept no clean sheets. The problem is not the system, it is the execution, and against Spain that margin for error collapses entirely.

Bielsa has been open about the dysfunction around his squad. Reports emerged in the days before this fixture that senior players including Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur and Federico Valverde requested a meeting with the coach to complain about the intensity of training, claiming it had contributed to injuries. They also reportedly asked for a change of system for this game. To cap it all, Uruguay arrive without Ronald Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, both absent with muscle bruises, two of their most influential players, stripped from the team for the biggest game of the campaign.

Spain, meanwhile, will be without midfielder Pedri, who picked up bookings in both of their opening group games and is suspended for this fixture. De la Fuente is expected to reshuffle his midfield as a result, with Dani Olmo retaining his place and Nico Williams pushing for a starting role. Lamine Yamal, who scored a spectacular goal against Saudi Arabia, is expected to start again. Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted twice against Saudi Arabia, also keeps his place in the forward line. The squad depth available to De la Fuente is a marked contrast to the problems Bielsa faces on the opposite bench.

match result: spain to win

Spain arrive with a settled squad, genuine defensive solidity, zero goals conceded, an xG-against of 0.17 across two games, and the freedom that comes from needing only a draw. Uruguay are without their best defender and their most creative midfielder, are carrying a goalkeeper who has been at fault for goals in both previous games, and have a dressing room in visible disarray. Bielsa's side have the possession numbers and the pressing intensity to make this uncomfortable, but they have not been able to convert that dominance into wins against far weaker opposition. Spain will control, keep it tight, and nick it through one of their forwards. A 1-0 to the European champions is the most likely outcome.

Correct Score: 0-1

Spain have kept back-to-back clean sheets at this tournament and face a Uruguay side missing their first-choice centre-back and chief creative midfielder. Both of Uruguay's goals so far came through set-piece chaos and individual errors rather than open-play construction, against Spain's organised backline, that route looks blocked. A 1-0 to Spain, as their xG data and H2H record both support, is the most efficient outcome at 11/2.

TIP 02✓ Hit

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Spain have conceded zero goals across two group games and generated an xG-against of just 0.17 per match, figures that strongly suggest this will be a tight, low-scoring affair. Uruguay's xG-for of 2.02 per game looks flattering given the quality of opposition faced so far; against Spain's defence the chances will be harder to create. The Under 2.5 at 8/13 is short but merited, neither side is likely to produce the kind of open game that pushes this over the line.

TIP 03✓ Hit

Both Teams to Score: No

Spain have not conceded in two matches at this tournament. Uruguay, stripped of De Arrascaeta and Araujo, will struggle to unlock a backline that has barely been threatened. The BTTS 'No' at 8/11 is the natural companion to an Away Win pick, Spain score, Uruguay fail to, the market lands. The only realistic risk is a late consolation, which the odds already price in.

TIP 04✗ Miss

Anytime Goalscorer: Mikel Oyarzabal

Oyarzabal scored twice against Saudi Arabia in Spain's previous group game and is operating in peak confidence under De la Fuente. He leads the line for the European champions and receives the ball in dangerous central areas regularly. With Uruguay's defensive cover weakened by Araujo's absence, there is more space in behind for a runner of his movement. At around 7/4, he represents the strongest goalscorer case from either squad.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Double Chance: Away or Draw

Spain need a point to top the group and are the superior side on every measurable metric at this tournament. A Uruguay win requires them to do something they have failed to do against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, find a way to score first and hold a lead. With two key absentees and a keeper under pressure, the Double Chance covering Spain or Draw at around 1/7 provides clean, low-risk cover for anyone who wants the position without backing the draw explicitly.

Both Teams to Score
13/20

Correlated with the Away Win but not identical, a 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 Spain win all see this land, and Spain's defensive record makes a clean sheet the likeliest outcome. This leg is the differentiator that boosts the builder price without taking on a great deal of additional risk.

Mikel Oyarzabal
✗ Miss
Anytime Goalscorer
7/4

With Spain expected to win and keep a clean sheet, picking the goalscorer is the natural third leg. Oyarzabal scored twice in the last group game, leads the line for Spain and is their most consistent finisher at the tournament. He is from a different market to the first two legs, and his involvement is not directly dependent on the scoreline, he can score in a 1-0 or a 3-0, keeping both previous legs valid.
