The FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 throws up a fixture that needs no build-up: Portugal against Spain, Iberian neighbours and old rivals, meeting in a knockout game for the first time. The winner goes through to the quarter-finals; the loser goes home. Roberto Martinez's side have been functional rather than fluid in the group stage, but they arrive here unbeaten. Luis de la Fuente's Spain, meanwhile, have looked every bit the tournament favourites after winning three of their four fixtures while keeping a clean sheet in all four.

Portugal negotiated a tricky Group K without conceding an away goal, but they were far from convincing. A 1-1 draw with DR Congo on the opening day and a goalless stalemate with Colombia raised questions about their fluency. The 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan settled nerves, and a 2-1 win over Croatia in the round of 32, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first World Cup knockout goal and Goncalo Ramos settling it deep in stoppage time, gave the camp the momentum they wanted. Martinez had described the group stage as his side's warm-up, saying before the Croatia game: "Tomorrow we begin the World Cup, the second World Cup. It was very important to have good preparation." He will not be calling it a warm-up any more.

Spain's route has been smoother. After an unconvincing 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their opener, De la Fuente's side found their rhythm with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, a controlled 1-0 victory against Uruguay, and a 3-0 dismantling of Austria in the round of 32. They have scored eight goals in four games and conceded none. Lamine Yamal has been the tournament's standout individual so far, and the midfield engine of Rodri and Pedri has given Spain a level of control that no opponent has yet found an answer to. De la Fuente acknowledged the pressure his side carry, saying ahead of the Austria game: "We're continuing to grow under pressure. I love that high expectations are placed on us."

Portugal's recent form aggregate from four tournament games reads: two wins, two draws, eight goals scored, two conceded. Their average xG for sits at 1.59 per game, which is respectable, but their xG against of 1.04 per game is considerably higher than Spain's. De la Fuente's side average just 0.22 xG against per game across their four fixtures, a figure that reflects a defensive structure that has been almost impossible to breach. Spain average 19.5 shots per game and 68.3% possession, against Portugal's 13 shots and 61.8%. The head-to-head record offers some comfort for Portugal: six of the last eight meetings between these sides have ended level, and Portugal won the most recent, a UEFA Nations League final in June 2025, on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena. But that draw is the operative word: neither side has found it easy to beat the other in normal time.

Martinez looks set to name an unchanged XI from the side that beat Croatia, with the likely exception of the right-midfield slot. Portugal's preferred 4-2-3-1 has been consistent throughout the tournament. Spain rotate slightly more freely but De la Fuente has largely settled on a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 shape, with Rodri anchoring both systems. The absences of Nico Williams and Pino mean Alex Baena and Dani Olmo are the most likely wide options to support Yamal on the other flank.

Portugal: Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha; Neto, Fernandes, Leao; Ronaldo

Spain: Simon; Porro, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Baena; Oyarzabal

Portugal v Spain kicks off at 20:00 BST on Monday 6 July. In the UK, the match is broadcast live on ITV1, with a free stream available on ITVX.

match result: spain to win

Spain are the most complete side in this tournament and Portugal have given opponents opportunities that a sharper attack would have punished. De la Fuente's side have four clean sheets from four games, their midfield controls tempo better than any other team left in the draw, and Yamal gives them an individual threat that Portugal's backline will struggle to contain. Portugal can and will create chances, their xG for of 1.59 per game reflects genuine attacking intent, but converting against a defence that has conceded zero goals all tournament is another matter. The H2H record argues for caution, and extra time or penalties is a realistic outcome if Portugal defend deep, but on overall quality and form, Spain deserve to be favourites. Spain to win, 2-0.

Correct Score: 0-2

Spain have won three of their last four games to nil, and their defensive average of 0.0 goals conceded at this tournament is the best in the competition. Portugal have failed to score in one of their four games, the 0-0 with Colombia, and De la Fuente's side have the quality to keep them out here. A 2-0 win reflects Spain's expected output of 2.02 xG per game and a second Portugal clean sheet failure. At around 9/1, it is a realistic rather than speculative score.

TIP 02✓ Hit

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Only two of these sides' last eight head-to-head meetings have cleared 2.5 goals, an over-2.5 rate of 25%. Portugal's goals-against average at this tournament is 0.5 per game, and Spain have not conceded at all. With both defences well-organised and neither side likely to open up recklessly in a knockout game, the total goals market should stay low. Under 2.5 at 10/11 is the sensible side of this line.

TIP 03✓ Hit

Both Teams to Score: No

Spain have conceded zero goals in four games, while Portugal's average of 0.5 conceded per game is second only to Spain's in the tournament. Both teams scored in only three of the last eight meetings, a BTTS rate of 38%. A match where one side, most likely Portugal, fails to get on the scoresheet is the more probable outcome, and BTTS No at 23/20 reflects that.

TIP 04✗ Miss

Anytime Goalscorer: Lamine Yamal

Yamal has been the standout player of the 2026 World Cup group stage and round of 32. He operates in the space behind the full-back that Portugal's right side, whoever Martinez picks there, tends to vacate when Portugal look to attack. His combination play with Pedri and Olmo in the half-spaces gives him regular goal-scoring positions, and his shot volume at this tournament has been high. At around 5/2, he is a sound anytime scorer selection.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Double Chance: Away or Draw

Portugal have not beaten Spain in normal time across their last five meetings, with draws the most common result in this fixture. Spain's form, defensive record and squad depth make it very difficult to see Portugal winning in 90 minutes. Double Chance, Away or Draw, covers the two most likely outcomes of this fixture at short odds. At around 1/5 it is a banker-level selection for any accumulator where the bet builder is carrying the value.

Spain win is the backbone of the bet builder. Their four clean sheets and xG against of 0.22 per game mark them as the tournament's tightest defensive unit, and their attacking output of 2.02 xG per game gives them the tools to score. Anchoring the builder on an away win at 10/11 gives the other legs room to run.

No
✓ Hit
Both Teams to Score
23/20

BTTS No complements the Spain win leg cleanly without creating a direct correlation, Spain can win 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 and both legs land. Spain have kept four consecutive clean sheets at this tournament; Portugal's attack, led by a 41-year-old Ronaldo generating 3.75 shots on target per game, does not have the firepower to guarantee breaking that run. This leg is independently supported and reinforces the builder's logic.

Lamine Yamal
✗ Miss
Anytime Goalscorer
5/2

Yamal scoring is uncorrelated with the Spain win and BTTS No legs, and it adds meaningful odds to the combination. His role as Spain's primary creative threat in wide areas makes him a high-probability scorer or assister, and his shot volume at the tournament justifies the selection. Combined with Spain win and BTTS No, this builder offers a balanced, well-evidenced three-leg combination.
