Manchester City vs Manchester United – Community Shield Predictions and Betting Tips

Saturday afternoon sees two Premier League giants go head to head a week before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City face Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley. Kick-off is at 15:00, and ahead of the clash, we have the latest predictions put together by the experts at BetFootball

Manchester City

The Premier League champions will be out for revenge against their local rivals after the Red Devils denied them their chances of winning the double last season in their last competitive fixture, the FA Cup final.

Despite the Cityzen’s domination in everything else, the Community Shield has not been kind to them in recent years. Having been beaten previously in the tournament by Liverpool and Arsenal. Guardiola’s side have also seen many squad players have a disrupted summer playing in both the Euros and Copa America, so it will be interesting to see who is back fit and in form just a week before the new season.

Manchester United

Just 11 weeks after beating City in the FA Cup Final, ten Hag will be hopeful to see a repeat of his side reigning victorious and secure another piece of silverware over their local rivals. After a not-so-great season last time out, this is the time for United to stamp its authority before the season begins.

In contrast to their opponents, the Red Devils have enjoyed the most success overall in the Community Shield history, having won the competition more than any other side 21 times. Their last four appearances in the fixture have been victories; this is the side’s first appearance since 2016, when they beat Leicester City.

Manchester Community Shield History

Manchester City has participated in the last three Community Shields but has not won any of them. This is their fourth appearance in the competition after defeats to Leicester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal. It is their opponents, Manchester United, who were the last team to lose four Community Shields in a row.

This is the eighth time in the Community Shield that the match has been a repeat of the previous season’s FA Cup Final. Meanwhile, out of the last eight occasions, the Community Shield has been between the previous season’s champions and FA Cup winners, like this year.

This will be the third time Manchester City and Manchester United have met in the Community Shield, with United having won both previous matchups, a stat that bodes well for ten Hag. However, City won both Premier League contests last season at the Etihad and Old Trafford.

Community Shield Preview

In what could be a tight affair, we are backing Guardiola’s City side to come out on top in the 2024 Community Shield. A side out to rectify the loss in the FA Cup Final and with significantly more possession and shots in the match, the Cityzens will be confident of a turnaround this time out.

Erling Haaland also looks fresh after scoring a hat trick in a pre-season friendly against Chelsea. They will be without euro finalists Phil Foden, Rodri, John Stones, and Kyle Walker, who will return to training next week.

United have already lost Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund to injury. Harry Maguire remains doubtful; however, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw could feature despite only returning to training.
