France v England prediction: Deschamps bows out in Miami bronze final

Didier Deschamps takes charge of France for the last time when Les Bleus face England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff in Miami on Saturday. Both sides are licking their wounds after semi-final exits, but France's firepower and tournament momentum make them hard to oppose.

Didier Deschamps will lead France out for the very last time on Saturday evening, when Les Bleus face England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place playoff at Miami Stadium. It is not the setting the 57-year-old, a World Cup winner as both player and coach, had in mind when this tournament began, but Deschamps has made clear that bronze is still worth competing for. "It is not a friendly. It is a third-place playoff. The players, staff and I have the duty to reach this last objective," he told reporters in Miami on Friday.

France's hopes of a third successive final appearance were ended emphatically on Tuesday, when Spain beat them 2-0 in the semi-final. It was their only defeat in seven games at this World Cup; across those seven matches they have scored 16 goals at an average of 2.29 per game, conceding just four. England followed them out of the last four 24 hours later, losing 2-1 to Argentina in a match the Three Lions led before two second-half goals turned it on its head. Thomas Tuchel said bluntly before the game: "Nobody of the players, nobody of the French players wants to play for this match. They want to play in the final."

For all that frank admission, the fixture carries its own sub-plots. Deschamps departs after a 14-year reign that brought the 2018 World Cup, a runners-up medal in Qatar and three successive semi-final appearances. England, meanwhile, can finish third at a World Cup for the first time since 1990, their best result in 60 years. Neither team needs much extra motivation beyond pride, and in Kylian Mbappe's case, the Golden Boot. He enters the bronze final tied with Lionel Messi on eight goals, with France's captain acutely aware that one more could secure the individual prize.

Deschamps has confirmed he will make changes, acknowledging that some players are injured and unavailable, but Mbappe is fit and ready to start. France have used a 4-2-3-1 in all four of their tournament wins. Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola are expected to support Mbappe behind the striker, with N'Golo Kante and Manu Kone providing the midfield platform.

England have their own injury concerns after a physically demanding run to the semi-finals. Reece James aggravated a muscle issue late in the Argentina game and looks set to miss out. Bukayo Saka has been carrying a knock throughout the tournament, and both Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa were substituted with physical problems. Tuchel is expected to rotate heavily, with Kobbie Mainoo, Noni Madueke and Ollie Watkins all pushing for starts.

match result: france to win

France are the stronger team on every measurable at this tournament: more goals scored (16 to 8), better defensive record (0.5 conceded per game to England's 0.8), and an xG-for average of 2.08 across seven games. England limp into this match with a catalogue of injury concerns and the emotional hangover of surrendering a lead against Argentina. Deschamps is not going quietly, Mbappe's Golden Boot chase gives France an extra edge in the final third, and even a rotated Les Bleus side has too much quality for a tired Three Lions. Expect a France win, with goals at both ends given what the H2H record tells us.

Correct Score: 2-1

All three recorded H2H meetings between France and England have ended with both teams scoring, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-final, the last time they met at this stage, finished 2-1 to France. England have scored in six of their seven games in this tournament and have the attacking quality to nick a goal even in defeat, as their record shows. A 2-1 France win repeats the most recent H2H scoreline and reflects what is likely to be a competitive, if one-sided, fixture even with heavy rotation on both sides.

TIP 02✓ Hit

Over 2.5 Goals: Over

France have averaged 2.29 goals scored per game at this World Cup and have found the net in all seven of their matches. England have conceded eight goals in seven games (1.14 per match) and have been involved in over 2.5 goals in five of their seven fixtures. The H2H average is 3.33 goals per game across three meetings. With France needing goals for Mbappe's Golden Boot chase and both sides likely to play with some freedom given there is no title on the line, the Over 2.5 line at 2/5 is well supported by both the data and the context.

TIP 03✓ Hit

Both Teams to Score: Yes

All three recorded meetings between France and England have produced goals at both ends, a 100% BTTS rate in H2H. England have scored in six of their seven games at this tournament and possess Bellingham, Watkins and Gordon, all capable of finding the net regardless of who starts. France's defence, while strong, has been beaten in two of seven games and will face an England attack with nothing to lose. The BTTS market at 4/7 looks fair value given the combined evidence.

TIP 04✓ Hit

Anytime Goalscorer: Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe has scored eight goals in seven appearances at this World Cup, level with Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings. He has 19 shots on target in the tournament, the most productive shooting record among attacking players from either side, and carries a per-game scoring rate that makes him extremely likely to threaten any defence he faces. Deschamps has confirmed him available and fit to start. The personal motivation of the Golden Boot race makes him an even surer bet than usual to get on the scoresheet.

TIP 05✗ Miss

Double Chance: Home or Draw

France have lost just once at this World Cup and that was to a Spain side peaking at the right moment. England's away form has been solid, they have not conceded in any of their away fixtures, but they are carrying significant injury doubts and the emotional weight of a late collapse against Argentina. Covering France or the draw at 1/4 provides safe insurance against the unlikely scenario of a rotated, fatigued England side overcoming the tournament's second-highest scorers.

France are the anchor of this builder. They are the higher-quality side with Mbappe fit, motivated and starting. England's injury list and emotional fatigue from the Argentina semi-final make it unlikely they produce their best performance again within four days. France winning is the foundation on which the other two legs sit.

Both Teams to Score
5/14

Adding BTTS rather than a clean sheet pick avoids the correlation trap of backing France to win and France not to concede. England have scored in six of seven games and will press forward with freedom given the no-pressure context of a bronze final. This leg complements the France win selection while reflecting what the 100% H2H BTTS record actually says about these two sides.

Kylian Mbappe
✓ Hit
Anytime Goalscorer
4/5

A distinct third market that is not directly correlated to either of the first two legs. Mbappe scoring does not require France to win by a specific margin, nor does it require England to score or not score. He has eight goals in seven games, the Golden Boot is on the line, and he starts. Three clean, separate markets with a logical through-line: France win a goals-heavy game with Mbappe among the scorers.
