Scotland v Brazil prediction, lineups & tips: World Cup 2026 Group C

Scotland need at least a point to give themselves a strong shot at World Cup knockout football for the first time ever. Brazil, armed with a returning Neymar, have other ideas.

Scotland's long wait for a first World Cup knockout appearance reaches its defining moment at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Wednesday night. Steve Clarke's side sit third in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C on three points, knowing that a win over Brazil guarantees second place, while even a draw would put qualification very much in their own hands. Brazil, top of the group on four points, are bringing Neymar back from a calf injury for his first minutes of the tournament, and they want to finish top, not merely coast through.

Scotland's campaign has been a study in resilience. They opened with a 1-0 win over Haiti, their first World Cup victory for 36 years, before suffering a painful 1-0 defeat to Morocco, conceded after just 70 seconds through Ismael Saibari's strike. Clarke was blunt about how his players responded: "The first game against Haiti was a very nervous occasion and the match against Morocco was a big step forward. If we do the same thing again and take another stride forward then we can cause Brazil problems."

Scotland average just 0.5 goals per game in this tournament and mustered a single shot on target across two outings, though their xG against of 1.02 per game tells a more complicated story, they have not been outplayed by as much as the scorelines suggest. The challenge ahead is categorically harder, but Clarke's squad are not here to make up the numbers.

Former Scotland manager Craig Levein offered a candid read of Clarke's tactical dilemma. "There is a situation where even if we lose 1-0 in this match then we could still qualify," he told Sky Sports News. "It is a bit of a dilemma for Steve actually, whether he plays with his defensive hat on, which I think he probably will."

Brazil, meanwhile, have been unconvincing rather than imperious. They drew 1-1 with Morocco in their opener before beating Haiti 3-0 in Philadelphia courtesy of a Matheus Cunha brace and a Vinicius Junior strike. Carlo Ancelotti hailed that display as "complete", though doubts about the team's structure have persisted since the Morocco stalemate. Ancelotti, at his first World Cup as head coach and the first non-Brazilian to manage the Selecao at a finals, has averaged 2.0 goals per game and 5 shots on target per game across two fixtures, with an xG for of 1.38 per match. The quality is there; the consistency is not yet settled.

Critically, history is a note of caution for Brazil. Brazil's last three defeats in the group stage at a World Cup have all come on matchday three, including a 1-0 loss to Cameroon in Qatar 2022. They have never lost to Scotland in eight previous meetings, but they cannot treat this as a formality.

On Scotland's prospects, Ancelotti was measured rather than dismissive. "We want to beat Scotland to finish top of the group; that would be important," he said via Gazzetta dello Sport. "We will prepare for it, but it won't be easy. Scotland have very defined characteristics; they caused Morocco problems and can do the same to us. But we must remain calm, composed, and focused on our game."

Clarke is expected to stay with the 4-4-2 that has been Scotland's shape throughout the tournament. Angus Gunn has been excellent in goal. McKenna's potential return at centre-back would sharpen a backline that has conceded only once. For Brazil, the fascinating unknown is how much Neymar is given, a start or an impact sub role. Ancelotti suggested he was open to changes, and with Raphinha out, the attack is likely to see Rayan start wide alongside Vinicius Junior and Matheus Cunha.

match result: brazil to win

Scotland will be brave and the Tartan Army will make Hard Rock Stadium feel like Hampden for an hour. Clarke will set up to be compact and difficult to break down, and on another night a 0-0 or 1-1 is absolutely in the mix. But Brazil's counter-attacking threat through Vinicius Junior is a level above anything Scotland have faced in this group, Neymar's return adds another dimension off the bench, and the Selecao have real incentive to win the group rather than drift through. Scotland may well score, they are too well-organised to be shut out, but Brazil's quality in the final third should prove decisive.

Correct Score: 1-2

Scotland are compact and organised enough to avoid a heavy defeat, they have conceded just once in two games, but Brazil's attacking quality through Vinicius Junior, Cunha and a returning Neymar is hard to contain for 90 minutes. A 2-1 scoreline fits both teams' form: Brazil win the group, Scotland land a blow but fall short.

TIP 02✗ Miss

Both Teams to Score: Yes

Brazil have failed to keep a clean sheet in either game at this tournament, conceding to both Morocco and Haiti. Scotland scored in their opener against Haiti and Clarke has shown he will commit men forward when the game demands it. With Scotland needing a result, both sides have clear incentive to attack.

TIP 03✗ Miss

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Both sides have been involved in low-scoring affairs at this tournament. Scotland's two games have produced just one goal apiece; Brazil's two games have averaged 2.0 goals per match including a 3-0 routine win over Haiti that skews the numbers. Clarke will defend deep, and neither of Scotland's group games exceeded two goals. Under 2.5 at 10/11 offers a reasonable edge against a market that has already priced in a more open game.

TIP 04✗ Miss

Anytime Goalscorer: Vinicius Jr

Vinicius Junior has three goals and three assists in six World Cup appearances and scored in Brazil's 3-0 win over Haiti. With Raphinha gone and Neymar starting at best as a floater, Vinicius will be Brazil's primary attacking weapon on the left side. He averages 5 shots on target per game across the tournament and Scotland's right flank has been their weaker defensive channel.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Double Chance: Away or Draw

Brazil have not lost to Scotland in eight previous meetings. Even accounting for their matchday three vulnerability at World Cups, the gap in individual quality, particularly with Neymar returning and Vinicius Junior in form, makes a Scotland win a long shot. Draw No Bet on Brazil covers the scenario where Scotland dig in for the point they may actually need, at a price that reflects the realistic range of outcomes here.

Brazil's individual quality through Vinicius Junior, Cunha and a fit-again Neymar makes them clear favourites, and Scotland have limited attacking output, just one shot on target across two games. This anchors the builder on the most likely result.

Both Teams to Score
13/10

Scotland are not at this tournament to sit on their hands, they need a goal to have any chance of progressing. Brazil's defensive record is also imperfect: they have conceded in both games. Adding BTTS complements the Away Win leg by predicting a competitive rather than one-sided contest.

Vinicius Jr
✗ Miss
Anytime Goalscorer
3/2

If Brazil win and both sides score, Vinicius is the most likely individual catalyst. He has scored in this tournament already, leads Brazil's attack on the left, and faces a Scotland right side that has been exposed aerially and in behind. Pairing him with the other two legs makes the bet self-reinforcing without the correlated-leg problem of picking a first scorer alongside a scoreline.
