Aston Villa arrive at Camp Nou as one of five sides on nine points from three games, and they sit second in the Champions League table. Barcelona are eighth on six points after a 4-2 defeat at Paris Saint Germain on 20 October.

The hosts need a response in matchday four of the league phase. Villa have the better record, but the trip to Catalonia is by far the hardest of their three games so far.

Villa have scored 12 and conceded three in their three matches. They won 3-2 at Club Brugge on 8 September, then beat Fenerbahçe 6-0 and Viking 3-1 at Villa Park. They average 4.0 goals a game and 2.52 expected goals, with 10 shots on target per match.

Barcelona opened with a 5-1 home win over Feyenoord, then won 4-1 at Galatasaray. The loss in Paris followed. They have scored 11 and conceded six, an average of 2.0 against per game. They have not kept a clean sheet in any of their three matches, and have gone 18 Champions League games without one, the longest run of any team in this season's edition.

Rotation is unlikely at either end. Both sides sit inside the top eight, and the top eight earn direct passage to the last 16. Barcelona cannot afford a second defeat in four games. Villa will want to protect a perfect start.

The real selection issues are enforced. Barcelona are missing six players, including Dani Olmo. That leaves the hosts short at the back, where Villa's attack is scoring freely.

Barcelona start as strong favourites, per Al Jazeera's preview. Unai Emery has been in charge of Villa since October 2022, and he has built a side with a 100% record in this season's competition. Neither manager's pre-match comments were available when this preview was written.

Barcelona are likely to stay with their 4-3-3, though the defensive absences force changes. Villa have started all three games in a 4-2-3-1 and should not change.

Barcelona: Joan García; Cancelo, Cubarsí, Pesquer, Balde; De Jong, Pedri, Fermín; Yamal, Gabriel Jesus, Raphinha

Aston Villa: Wright; Cash, Lindelöf, Pau Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Goretzka; Buendía, McGinn, Garnacho; Jackson

Correct Score: 3-1

Barcelona have scored 11 in three games, averaging 3.7 per game, while Villa have conceded three in three. Villa's trip to Camp Nou is their first real test of the campaign. We expect Barcelona to score three and Villa to find a way past a makeshift defence once. The risk is a more open game where Villa score twice.

Over 2.5 Goals: Over

All three of Barcelona's league-phase games have gone over 2.5 goals, and so have all three of Villa's. Combined, the teams average 7.7 goals scored per game between them. Barcelona's defensive injuries make a low-scoring game very unlikely. The only risk is Villa sitting deep and shutting the game down.

Both Teams to Score: Yes

Barcelona have conceded in each of their three games this season, and in 18 consecutive Champions League matches. Villa have scored at least three in all three of their matches. Both teams should find the net. Villa's one clean sheet came at home, and Barcelona are missing García and Christensen.

Anytime Goalscorer: Raphinha

Barcelona average 20 shots a game, with 8.33 on target, and Raphinha is the likeliest to benefit from that volume. Villa's high defensive line leaves space for a runner like him. The risk is a rotation or a rest, but a game this important makes that unlikely.

Over 3.5 Goals: Over

Barcelona's three games have produced 6, 5 and 6 goals, and Villa's have produced 5, 6 and 4. The sides average 4.0 and 3.7 goals scored per game. Barcelona are also short at the back. Four or more goals is a strong chance, but a quiet Villa attack would undermine it.

3/11

Barcelona's home record and attacking depth are the foundation of the bet. They are also the likeliest source of the goals that the other legs need.

Over
Over 2.5 Goals
1/5

This pairs naturally with a Barcelona win, since Villa should score at least once against a defence missing key players. Both sides have gone over 2.5 goals in every game this season.

Raphinha
Anytime Goalscorer
4/7

Raphinha links the win and goals legs, as he is the most likely scorer in a Barcelona victory. Barcelona average 8.33 shots on target per game, so the chances should come.
