Yoro credits Ferdinand for helping make Manchester United decision

New Manchester United defender Leny Yoro says club legend Rio Ferdinand helped him decide to move to England this summer.

The 18-year-old has signed from Lille in a deal that exceeds over £50million, despite interest from Real Madrid.

Yoro also admitted that recently departed centre-back Raphael Varane is one of his inspirations, alongside Ferdinand.

He has been integrated straight into Erik ten Hag’s squad for pre-season and could be in line for some minutes against Rangers on Saturday.

But he has been getting his media duties out of the way first of all, where he revealed agent Ferdinand’s antics in getting a deal done.

Speaking on the club’s Instagram, he said: “Let’s say, Rapha Varane. He is a top defender. He didn’t play a long time here [Man Utd] but he’s an inspiration for me.

“United legend? Let’s say Rio Ferdinand. I don’t even know if I can explain this guy but he’s a top defender and a really good guy.

“I just called him but I hope to meet him soon. Not today, but during the transfer market. He helped me a lot to make my choice, he explained how big United is, so it was really good for me.”

Yoro has a big reputation for being one of Europe’s top prospects and will have to hit the ground running in Manchester.

He will jet out to the US with the Red Devils to face some Premier League rivals before gearing up for the new season in less than a month’s time.
