Mauricio Pochettino called it 'the final of the World Cup' this week, and he meant it. The United States face Bosnia & Herzegovina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Thursday, with everything that has been built around this so-called golden generation of American football on the line. Group D winners, an expectant home nation, the pressure is firmly on the hosts to deliver.

The USA topped Group D with two wins and a defeat, beating Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0 before losing 3-2 to Türkiye in a game Pochettino used to rotate. Head coach Sergej Barbarez has kept faith with the same core throughout: 40-year-old Edin Dzeko as the focal point, Ermedin Demirovic alongside him, and the young pair of Esmir Bajraktarević and Kerim Alajbegović offering pace on the wings. Getting this far is already a first for Bosnia & Herzegovina, they have never previously reached the knockout stage of a World Cup.

The form guide is worth examining carefully. USA have averaged 1.5 xG for and 1.37 xG against per game across their three matches, solid but not dominant numbers. Bosnia have averaged just 0.62 xG for per game, generating only 9 shots per fixture on average against 14.67 for the USA. Bajraktarević is a player of genuine pedigree, the New England Revolution product moved to PSV Eindhoven and switched international allegiance to Bosnia having previously held a USA camp cap, and he warrants watching. But the gap in creative output between these two sides is substantial.

Pochettino said ahead of the tie: "We need to perform at our best." He does not believe, he has said, that the USA are necessarily the favourites, pointing to Germany's group-stage exit as evidence that the tournament has humbled bigger reputations. Bosnia coach Barbarez has been bullish in his own right, saying of his squad: "We are confident enough to face anyone."
