Uruguay v Spain prediction, lineups & tips: Group H decider at Estadio Akron
Spain need only a point to top Group H. Uruguay need a result to be sure of progressing without relying on Cape Verde slipping up. The only meeting of two former world champions in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage has plenty riding on it.
The only clash of former FIFA World Cup winners in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup arrives on Saturday morning at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, and it carries knockout implications for both sides. Spain head into this Group H decider having already half-booked their place in the Round of 32. Uruguay, two-time world champions who lifted the trophy in 1930 and 1950, face the very real prospect of a second consecutive group-stage exit if they cannot get a result.
Uruguay
SpainSpain sit top of Group H on four points after a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde on matchday one and a ruthless 4-0 dismissal of Saudi Arabia on matchday two. Luis de la Fuente's side need just a point here to secure first place, though Cape Verde could theoretically overhaul them on goal difference if they beat Saudi Arabia by five or more in the simultaneous fixture. In practice, the group is Spain's to lose.
Uruguay arrive in a different kind of trouble. Marcelo Bielsa's side were held 1-1 by Saudi Arabia on the opening matchday before a chaotic 2-2 against Cape Verde on matchday two, a game in which an Olivera own goal gifted the debutants a leveller. Two points from two games leaves them second, level on points with Cape Verde, and in need of at least a draw to give themselves any realistic chance of advancing. A win would seal second place outright; a draw leaves their fate partly dependent on Cape Verde's result against Saudi Arabia.
Spain's numbers at this tournament are striking. They have conceded no goals across their two group games, averaging 2.0 goals scored per match, and their expected-goals-against figure across those matches stands at just 0.17, the mark of a backline that has barely been tested. Uruguay have been the opposite: dominant in possession, averaging 66 per cent across their two games and putting up an xG of 2.02 in the process, yet they have shipped three goals and kept no clean sheets. The problem is not the system, it is the execution, and against Spain that margin for error collapses entirely.
Bielsa has been open about the dysfunction around his squad. Reports emerged in the days before this fixture that senior players including Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur and Federico Valverde requested a meeting with the coach to complain about the intensity of training, claiming it had contributed to injuries. They also reportedly asked for a change of system for this game. To cap it all, Uruguay arrive without Ronald Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, both absent with muscle bruises, two of their most influential players, stripped from the team for the biggest game of the campaign.

Spain, meanwhile, will be without midfielder Pedri, who picked up bookings in both of their opening group games and is suspended for this fixture. De la Fuente is expected to reshuffle his midfield as a result, with Dani Olmo retaining his place and Nico Williams pushing for a starting role. Lamine Yamal, who scored a spectacular goal against Saudi Arabia, is expected to start again. Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted twice against Saudi Arabia, also keeps his place in the forward line. The squad depth available to De la Fuente is a marked contrast to the problems Bielsa faces on the opposite bench.
