Switzerland head into the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 32 as group winners, unbeaten in three games and with seven goals scored. They meet Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver, and the fixture carries a subplot that has dominated the build-up: Algeria's manager, Vladimir Petkovic, spent seven years in charge of the Swiss national team before handing over to Murat Yakin in 2021. Switzerland went about Group B with minimum fuss, beating Bosnia & Herzegovina 4-1 and Canada 2-1 either side of a 1-1 draw with Qatar. Seven points, no defeats, and a goal difference of plus four put them top. Yakin's side averaged 2.33 goals per game in the group stage, with an xG of 2.12 per match, and averaged 61.7 per cent possession across their three fixtures. All three games went both teams scoring.

Algeria's route was more turbulent. A 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opener left them needing results, and they got them: a 2-1 win over Jordan followed, then a remarkable 3-3 draw with Austria, a game in which Algeria conceded a stoppage-time equaliser that meant they finished third in Group J on four points. They qualified as one of the tournament's best third-placed sides. The problem is the goals conceded column: seven in three games, an average of 2.33 against per match.

The Petkovic angle is impossible to ignore. He coached Switzerland from 2014 to 2021, working closely with many players still in this squad. Yakin acknowledged as much before the game. "The players know him and he knows many of them," Yakin said in his pre-match press conference. "That can be an advantage and a disadvantage, but five years have passed. Our football has evolved."

Petkovic, for his part, kept the focus on his own side. "We want to stay in the competition," he said ahead of the fixture, declining to dwell on facing his former team. He pointed to Algeria's defensive improvement in the draw against Austria as evidence of progress, adding: "I'm convinced we showed positive signs and tomorrow we'll be at our best."
