Preston v Lincoln prediction: Championship strugglers host promoted Imps at Deepdale

There is a particular kind of dread that settles over a Championship home end when the team hasn't won since August, and Deepdale has had six weeks to get used to it. Preston sit bottom of the division after five defeats in six league outings, a run so grim that the goodwill from beating Blackburn in the Lancashire derby lasted barely a week before a 2-1 defeat at Watford put them straight back in the mire. Into that mess arrive Lincoln, playing Championship football for the first time in over 60 years and, somehow, looking like they belong there already.

Preston's numbers make for grim reading regardless of the run of results either side of it. They have scored just six goals in six league games this season, an average of one a match, and conceded 12 at the other end, a rate of two per game that only gets worse at Deepdale, where they are shipping 2.3 a match. Ali McCann's absence has compounded matters: the captain underwent surgery on a hamstring injury picked up in the Carabao Cup defeat by Everton and is expected to be out for months, a considerable loss for a midfield already missing Brad Potts.

Heckingbottom has publicly acknowledged the scale of the task, telling BBC Radio Lancashire that the poor start had taken him by surprise even as he insisted his side were edging closer to their level. There is something in that. Preston created 2.44 expected goals at Watford in midweek, 1.18 more than the hosts managed, and still lost. It is the sort of forgetting-how-to-win spell that becomes an unhealthy habit fast if it isn't nipped, and a fifth home game without a win would leave Heckingbottom facing some very awkward questions.

Lincoln, by contrast, look like a side thoroughly enjoying themselves at a level most of their supporters have never seen. They arrive unbeaten in three matches, a run built on a 1-1 draw with Southampton, a goalless stalemate with Blackburn and a win at Bolton, and the underlying numbers back up the eye test: three clean sheets from their last six games and only one defeat via the top flight quality of a Portsmouth side that beat them 3-1 back in August. Joint head coach Tom Shaw's approach of retaining possession, a point he stressed when reflecting on a similar away trip, suggests the Imps won't simply sit in and hope.

Preston's LLLLWL reads about as badly as a form line can without a full collapse, one solitary win against Blackburn sandwiched between four straight defeats either side. Lincoln's LLWDDW tells a different story: two defeats early in the campaign have given way to a stretch of five games unbeaten, with the draws against Southampton and Blackburn arguably the more instructive results given the level of opposition. Preston's underlying numbers, particularly that Watford xG performance, suggest they are not quite as bad as the table says. However, form like this tends to feed on itself, and Lincoln arrive as the side trusting their process.

Preston prop up the Championship on three points from six games, their goal difference of minus six a fair reflection of a defence that has been carved open too easily. Lincoln, newly promoted and expected by most to be fighting relegation, instead sit comfortably clear of that fight with eight points from the same number of matches, an unbeaten run doing plenty to settle any early nerves about life at this level. For Preston, defeat here would extend a run without a win to five home games and pile further pressure on a manager already under scrutiny for a difficult start. For Lincoln, three points would be another marker in a debut Championship campaign that has so far gone far better than the pre-season pessimists predicted.

The competitive rivalry between these two clubs long predates any data our systems hold on it, with the pair meeting 40 times in all competitive football and last squaring off in the league back in February 1999. On record here, though, there has been just one meeting: a 2024 pre-season friendly in Spain that Lincoln won 1-0, with an average of one goal in that game and neither side finding the net twice.

A single low-scoring friendly from over two years ago tells us almost nothing useful about how this one will go, and the more relevant history is the one Preston fans will remember without needing a database: 20 wins from those 40 previous competitive meetings, with Lincoln taking 11 and nine finishing level. Whether that historical pattern of home dominance holds up against a current Preston side shipping goals for fun is the question, and on this season's form alone it looks a good deal shakier than it once did. The under 2.5 goals line from that solitary friendly is not one to lean on either way given how differently both sides are set up now.

The gap that jumps out is defensive solidity. Preston are conceding at an average of two goals a game across the season, while Lincoln have let in just one per game and kept three clean sheets in their last six outings, a considerable mismatch when one side has to find a way past the other. Preston also lag badly in the possession stakes at home this season, with an average share of only 42.8%, even as Lincoln have made do with only 37% themselves this year, suggesting City are happy to play without the ball and hit on the counter, exactly the kind of game that has hurt Preston before.

The value here sits with the away side. Lincoln's defensive numbers, three clean sheets and just one goal conceded per game on average, stack up well against a Preston attack that has managed only six goals all season, and the wider markets around goals and goalscorers largely follow from that same defensive gap.
