The FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 throws up a fixture that needs no build-up: Portugal against Spain, Iberian neighbours and old rivals, meeting in a knockout game for the first time. The winner goes through to the quarter-finals; the loser goes home. Roberto Martinez's side have been functional rather than fluid in the group stage, but they arrive here unbeaten. Luis de la Fuente's Spain, meanwhile, have looked every bit the tournament favourites after winning three of their four fixtures while keeping a clean sheet in all four.

Portugal negotiated a tricky Group K without conceding an away goal, but they were far from convincing. A 1-1 draw with DR Congo on the opening day and a goalless stalemate with Colombia raised questions about their fluency. The 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan settled nerves, and a 2-1 win over Croatia in the round of 32, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first World Cup knockout goal and Goncalo Ramos settling it deep in stoppage time, gave the camp the momentum they wanted. Martinez had described the group stage as his side's warm-up, saying before the Croatia game: "Tomorrow we begin the World Cup, the second World Cup. It was very important to have good preparation." He will not be calling it a warm-up any more.

Spain's route has been smoother. After an unconvincing 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their opener, De la Fuente's side found their rhythm with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, a controlled 1-0 victory against Uruguay, and a 3-0 dismantling of Austria in the round of 32. They have scored eight goals in four games and conceded none. Lamine Yamal has been the tournament's standout individual so far, and the midfield engine of Rodri and Pedri has given Spain a level of control that no opponent has yet found an answer to. De la Fuente acknowledged the pressure his side carry, saying ahead of the Austria game: "We're continuing to grow under pressure. I love that high expectations are placed on us."

Portugal's recent form aggregate from four tournament games reads: two wins, two draws, eight goals scored, two conceded. Their average xG for sits at 1.59 per game, which is respectable, but their xG against of 1.04 per game is considerably higher than Spain's. De la Fuente's side average just 0.22 xG against per game across their four fixtures, a figure that reflects a defensive structure that has been almost impossible to breach. Spain average 19.5 shots per game and 68.3% possession, against Portugal's 13 shots and 61.8%. The head-to-head record offers some comfort for Portugal: six of the last eight meetings between these sides have ended level, and Portugal won the most recent, a UEFA Nations League final in June 2025, on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena. But that draw is the operative word: neither side has found it easy to beat the other in normal time.

Martinez looks set to name an unchanged XI from the side that beat Croatia, with the likely exception of the right-midfield slot. Portugal's preferred 4-2-3-1 has been consistent throughout the tournament. Spain rotate slightly more freely but De la Fuente has largely settled on a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 shape, with Rodri anchoring both systems. The absences of Nico Williams and Pino mean Alex Baena and Dani Olmo are the most likely wide options to support Yamal on the other flank.
