Sweden sit top of Group F at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Ronald Koeman's Netherlands side find themselves under pressure after squandering a winning position against Japan. It is a situation the Oranje did not anticipate, and one they must resolve at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday evening.

The Dutch were the better side for long stretches against Japan in Dallas, twice taking the lead through Virgil van Dijk's header and Crysencio Summerville's curled effort. Then came the controversy. Sweden, by contrast, arrive in Houston with momentum and confidence. Graham Potter's side dismantled Tunisia 5-1 in Monterrey, with Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari scoring a brace and both Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres finding the net. Potter noted after the game that the pair had barely played together before: "They complement each other very well, bringing different attributes and qualities. Together they can be a real threat."

It is worth noting how Sweden arrived at this World Cup. They failed to qualify from their European group outright, finishing bottom, and reached the finals only through the play-offs, with Gyokeres scoring a hat-trick against Ukraine and a dramatic last-minute winner against Poland. Potter, who took over last October following his troubled spells at Chelsea and West Ham, has galvanised the squad. The opening-day scoreline suggested his attacking system is now functioning exactly as intended. A win here would put Sweden on the verge of the round of 32 with a game to spare.

Koeman has spoken consistently about his squad's belief: "Maybe we are not considered the big favourite to win it, but we are a team that can surprise everybody." That confidence may be tested, but the Netherlands have the squad depth, 14 Premier League players in the travelling party, and the tactical quality to impose themselves when they attack with purpose rather than caution. Against Japan, the Dutch averaged 60% possession and generated ten shots. Against Sweden, they will need to be more vertical from the outset and less inclined to sit on a lead.
