Scotland need only a win to reach the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history, and the opportunity comes on Friday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, when they face Morocco in Group C matchday two. Three points would send Steve Clarke's side into the round of 32 with a game to spare, and could even hand them top spot in the group if Brazil fail to beat Haiti simultaneously. The prize does not come much bigger for Scottish football.

Scotland arrived at this tournament having waited 28 years for a return to the World Cup, and they made the most of their opener. John McGinn's first-half goal settled a tight contest against Haiti, earning the Tartan Army their first World Cup victory since 1990 and only the fifth in the nation's history. The performance was hardly commanding, Clarke admitted afterwards his side could have done more with the ball, but the three points are banked and the mood in camp is good.

Steve Clarke, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday, made clear he has no illusions about what awaits. "Any time you play a team inside the world's top 10, you know you're going to have to be good without and with the ball," Clarke said. "Morocco reached the last four in the last World Cup and I think this team are slightly better than that, that gives you an idea of the task ahead." Captain Andy Robertson added that Scotland are targeting history: "I don't think any of the lads and the coaching staff shy away from us wanting to be the first team to be able to do that for our country."

Morocco come in off the back of a creditable 1-1 draw with Brazil, Ismael Saibari's 21st-minute opener cancelled out by Vinicius Junior. Their new head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, appointed in March after Walid Regragui's resignation and previously the architect of Morocco's U20 World Cup triumph, has shifted the Atlas Lions away from the defensive counter-attacking template of 2022 toward a possession-based 4-2-3-1. He has managed just two senior international matches in total, so questions around the structure remain, but the Brazil display was encouraging.

Ouahbi, at his own press conference on Thursday, acknowledged the group standings but refused to concede anything. "We have one point and they have three. They are ahead of us and we have to do our best. It will be a hard match," he said. He added: "We want to control the rhythm of the match. We do not want to keep the same performance we had against Brazil. We want to improve." Morocco know a win would put them in a commanding position to progress from a group they were expected to win, with a third fixture against Haiti to come.

Clarke, pressed further on the threat posed by Morocco's young midfield, went a step further: "Do I consider this match as difficult as the Brazil game? Yes, absolutely. Morocco reached the semi-finals in the last edition in Qatar, and I believe the Moroccan team is good, if not the best. They will have ambitions to reach the semi-finals again, so the match represents a significant challenge for us. I expect Morocco to have more possession than us tomorrow, and what we must do is, when we have the ball, we must pose a serious threat to Morocco."

Clarke named a 4-4-2 in the opener against Haiti and is likely to keep faith with the same shape, though he hinted he wants more with the ball this time. For Morocco, Ouahbi has the luxury of a squad that includes Achraf Hakimi at right-back, PSV midfielder Ismael Saibari, reported to be joining Bayern Munich this summer, and teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, who impressed against Brazil, in the engine room alongside Neil El Aynaoui. Brahim Diaz provides creativity from the right.

Scotland (4-4-2): Gunn; Hickey, Hendry, Hanley, Robertson; Gannon-Doak, Ferguson, McTominay, McGinn; Adams, Shankland

Morocco (4-2-3-1): Bounou; Hakimi, Mazraoui, Diop, Riad; Bouaddi, El Aynaoui; Diaz, Saibari, El Khannouss; Ounahi

match result: morocco to win

Scotland deserve enormous credit for winning their World Cup opener, but Morocco are a different proposition entirely to Haiti. Ouahbi's side generated more attacking threat against Brazil, one of the tournament favourites, than Clarke's side managed against a limited Haitian team. Scotland will be compact and hard to break down, but Morocco have the individual quality across their front four to find a way through. Clarke's own admission that he expects Morocco to control possession is telling. The Atlas Lions should win this, but Scotland will make them work for it.

Correct Score: 0-2

Morocco have the individual quality to beat Scotland without conceding. Clarke's side managed just 2 shots on target against Haiti, whose defensive line was hardly World Cup standard. If Morocco control territory as expected, a 2-0 scoreline without reply is entirely plausible. The odds of roughly 17/2 reflect a reasonable value case given Morocco's attacking depth.

TIP 02✓ Hit

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Both teams produced exactly one goal in their opening matches, and both games finished under 2.5 goals. Scotland under Clarke tend to be well-organised defensively, they kept a clean sheet against Haiti and conceded 0 goals in this tournament so far. Morocco have quality but their Ouahbi-era setup is still bedding in, having managed only two senior matches. Under 2.5 is the sensible position at 8/13.

TIP 03✓ Hit

Both Teams to Score: No

Scotland kept a clean sheet against Haiti and conceded 0 goals across their only World Cup 2026 fixture to date. Their average goals against this tournament stands at zero. Morocco's opener against Brazil went to BTTS, but Scotland defend as a unit far more diligently than Brazil did in that match. Clarke's 4-4-2 shape leaves little space behind the lines, and Scotland's tournament scoring form, one goal from a John McGinn strike, hardly suggests the attack will run riot at the other end. No at 10/11 has clear appeal.

TIP 04✓ Hit

Anytime Goalscorer: Ismael Saibari

Saibari opened his World Cup account against Brazil with a clinical 21st-minute finish and is reportedly set to join Bayern Munich from PSV Eindhoven. He leads the Morocco line and is their most dangerous attacking player this tournament. With Morocco expected to dominate possession and push for a win they need to consolidate their group position, Saibari is the likeliest source of goals for the Atlas Lions.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Double Chance: Away or Draw

At 5/50 Scotland to win outright is priced at 11/2 with bet365, a fair reflection of the gap between the sides. Morocco are a 2022 World Cup semi-finalist with a squad packed with Premier League and La Liga regulars, now managed by a coach who has shifted them toward proactive, possession-based football. Even accounting for Scotland's defensive resilience, the Atlas Lions avoiding defeat looks an almost certain outcome. Away or Draw at 11/10-on provides a low-risk anchor for the picks.

Morocco are the class act in this group game and carry the greater attacking threat across every metric from matchday one. A Morocco win underpins the builder without directly correlating to the goalscorer leg, making it structurally clean.

Both Teams to Score
8/11

A Morocco win with Scotland failing to score complements the match result leg rather than contradicting it. Scotland averaged 2 shots on target against Haiti; Morocco have the defensive organisation and concentration to keep that below par again. This leg prevents any dilution from a Scotland consolation goal.

Ismael Saibari
✓ Hit
Anytime Goalscorer
3/1

Saibari scoring ties the builder to a specific outcome within the Morocco win, boosting the combined odds to a meaningful return. He already has a World Cup goal this tournament and leads Morocco's attacking line. Combining his anytime scorer price with a clean-sheet Morocco win avoids directly correlated markets and keeps the builder valid with most operators.
