France v Senegal prediction, lineups & tips: World Cup 2026 Group I opener

France open their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on Tuesday against the one side they know from bitter experience can beat them in a tournament opener. Twenty-four years ago, Senegal stunned the reigning world champions 1-0 in Seoul, Papa Bouba Diop's first-half goal sending shockwaves through the sport and beginning the end for that France vintage. Didier Deschamps was on the pitch that day. At his pre-match press conference on Monday, Deschamps batted away the revenge narrative. 'I know people like to use the word revenge, but there is no revenge in football,' he said. 'That was 24 years ago, and we have another page to write now. Senegal are one of the best African countries, one of the best teams in the world, so we know what to expect.'

Senegal arrive for their third consecutive World Cup as arguably Africa's strongest side. Coach Pape Thiaw, who was on the bench as a player when Senegal beat France in 2002, has won 22 of his 27 matches in charge since becoming permanent boss at the end of 2024. His squad lost just once in ten CAF qualifying matches, topping their group two points clear of DR Congo.

The Lions of Teranga carry a sub-plot into the tournament, too. They were widely regarded as the superior side in the 2025 AFCON final against hosts Morocco, winning 1-0 on the pitch, only for CAF to subsequently award the trophy to Morocco following a disputed ruling that is still before the Court of Arbitration for Sport. That festering sense of injustice gives this squad an additional edge. Sadio Mane, 34, who has announced this will be his last World Cup, missed the 2022 tournament through injury. He arrives at the peak of his international legacy: Senegal's all-time leading scorer with 53 goals in 126 appearances. Nicolas Jackson of Bayern Munich and Everton's Iliman Ndiaye give Pape Thiaw a forward line with Premier League and Bundesliga pace.

Senegal's warm-up results were patchier than France's. A 3-2 defeat by co-hosts USA preceded a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia. They will need a clean sheet to have any chance of repeating 2002.

It was N'Golo Kante, rather than Mbappe, who fronted France's pre-match media duties on Monday, with Deschamps citing a desire to protect his players from distraction. Kante acknowledged the task ahead while keeping his message measured. 'Senegal has a lot of quality,' he said, noting that the high temperatures in New Jersey were a factor France had discussed in preparation.
