Fenerbahçe v Liverpool: Istanbul test for in-form visitors

Liverpool travel to Istanbul on Wednesday night with a perfect record in the Champions League league stage and a growing reputation for goals.

They have won all three games, scored 12 and sit fourth on nine points. Fenerbahçe are in a very different place. They were beaten 6-0 away on 14 October, then let a lead slip in a 2-2 home draw with Slavia Praha on 20 October.

This is matchday four of eight in the league stage. The hosts need points to stay in touch. Liverpool can take another step towards the top eight.

How they got here

Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at home on 9 September, then won 6-3 at Lask Linz on 14 October. They followed that with a 4-3 home win over Villarreal on 20 October. They average 4.0 goals a game but have also conceded seven, and have yet to keep a clean sheet.

Fenerbahçe have one league-stage win to show from their games so far. Their season stats show 11 goals scored and 12 conceded across nine matches in the competition's qualifying rounds and league stage. They have conceded an average of 2.0 goals per away game this season, against 0.8 at home.

Rotation and selection

Rotation is unlikely to be a talking point for Liverpool. Their results are strong and the squad is thin in several areas. Several players are listed as unavailable, so the selection is largely forced.

Fenerbahçe have a similar problem in defence, where the back four are likely to be asked to cover for absentees. They have no obvious reason to hold anything back with a home game against a side that scores freely.

Our headline tip✗ Miss

Match Result: Liverpool to win

Liverpool average 4.0 goals a game and 20.67 shots, while Fenerbahçe have conceded 2.0 a game on their travels and are short of defenders. The hosts have enough at home to find a goal, but Liverpool's attack is too strong. Liverpool should win comfortably and give their goal difference another boost.

Our predicted scoreFenerbahçe 1–3 Liverpool
✗ Prediction missed
TIP 01 · Correct score✗ Miss

Correct score 1-3

Liverpool have scored three or more in all three league-stage games, and have conceded in each too. Fenerbahçe have scored in eight of their nine games. A 3-1 away win fits both trends.

TIP 02 · Over 2.5 goals✓ Hit

Over 2.5 goals

Liverpool's three league-stage games have produced 7, 9 and 3 goals. That means all three cleared 2.5 goals. Fenerbahçe's own games are lower scoring, with only 3 of 9 going over, but Liverpool's attack and shaky defence drag this one up. The risk is a cagey first half from a home side desperate not to concede.

TIP 03 · Both teams to score✓ Hit

Both teams to score

Liverpool have conceded in all three league-stage games, an average of 2.3 a game. Fenerbahçe have scored in eight of nine, and five of their nine games have seen both teams score. The hosts will get a goal at home. The risk is a Liverpool side that finally shuts up shop.

TIP 04 · Anytime goalscorer✗ Miss

C. Gakpo to score

Gakpo plays in the front line for a side averaging 20.67 shots a game and is a regular threat from the left. The risk is that the goals come from elsewhere in the attack.

TIP 05 · Draw no bet✗ Miss

Liverpool (draw no bet)

Liverpool have won all three league-stage games, while Fenerbahçe have drawn four of their nine games overall. A home draw is the main danger, so the stake comes back if it happens. We still expect the visitors to win.

Liverpool are the best side on the pitch and the base of the bet. The goals and the scorer leg both lean on them winning.

Over 2.5 goals

Over 2.5 goals

A Liverpool win in a high-scoring match fits a side that has gone over 2.5 in all three of its games. It complements the result leg without relying on Fenerbahçe scoring.

C. Gakpo to score

Anytime goalscorer

If Liverpool win and the goals flow, Gakpo is a likely candidate to be on the scoresheet. It ties the three legs together, with the corner count (Liverpool average 8.33 a game) pointing to sustained pressure.
