Ecuador's World Cup 2026 campaign took an ugly turn before it had properly started. Amad Diallo's 90th-minute winner for Ivory Coast left Sebastián Beccacece's side bottom of Group E after matchday one, despite hitting the woodwork three times in Philadelphia. Now, six days on at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, they face Curaçao in a fixture that has the unmistakable feel of a final chance.

Ecuador arrived at this FIFA World Cup 2026 on a 19-match unbeaten run, with 13 clean sheets along the way, and finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying, above Brazil and Uruguay, conceding just five goals across 18 games. The defeat to Ivory Coast was their first in two years. That context matters: this is not a side in free fall; it is a side that created 1.01 xG, took 12 shots and was denied by woodwork, then conceded to a late sucker punch.

Beccacece has been forthright about the psychological reset required. "When you don't start the way you wanted, the anxiety appears," the Argentine told reporters after the Ivory Coast game. The coach knows that a loss here, with Germany to come in the final round, would all but certainly end their tournament.

Curaçao's situation is arguably worse. The Caribbean island nation made their World Cup debut against Germany and were beaten 7-1, the heaviest defeat of the tournament so far. Livano Comenencia briefly made it 1-1 in the 21st minute, raising hopes of a historic upset, but Germany ran riot from there. Curaçao's xG against came in at 4.22 in that single game, and they managed just eight shots and 35 per cent possession. Dick Advocaat, the experienced Dutch coach who has been at the helm for the island nation, must pick his squad up from that and ask them to compete against opponents who, on paper, are significantly stronger.

For all the pressure on Ecuador, the gap in class between these two sides is considerable. Curaçao's back line was carved apart by Germany; Ecuador's attacking unit, led by the 36-year-old Enner Valencia, who has six World Cup goals across the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, is a different proposition to anything Advocaat's side have faced in qualifying. Neither side reported injury concerns ahead of kick-off.

Ecuador will likely revert to a 4-4-2 after Beccacece experimented with a 4-3-3 shape against Ivory Coast. Enner Valencia starts up front, with Gonzalo Plata providing width on the right. Moisés Caicedo sits deep and controls tempo.

Curaçao are expected to set up in their familiar 4-3-1-2, with Comenencia in the No. 10 role behind the forwards. Advocaat may ask his side to sit deep and try to frustrate Ecuador in the opening exchanges.
