South Korea arrive as the 11th consecutive World Cup appearance for the Taegeuk Warriors, the longest active qualifying run of any Asian nation. Manager Hong Myung-bo, who captained the country at the famous 2002 semi-final run, guided his side through AFC qualifying unbeaten, winning 11 and drawing five across the third round while scoring 40 goals. Pre-tournament friendlies painted a more complicated picture: back-to-back defeats in March 2026, including a 4-0 loss to Ivory Coast, exposed defensive fragility against physically strong opposition. Czech Republic are not Ivory Coast, but Hong will know the questions about his defensive shape have not been answered.

At the centre of everything for South Korea is Son Heung-min. The 33-year-old LAFC forward, who has earned 141 caps and scored 56 international goals, is appearing at his fourth World Cup, almost certainly his last. Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain and Wolves' Hwang Hee-chan provide the support around him, and when the press is on and the transitions are rapid, this attack is genuinely dangerous at international level.

Czech Republic's path to Guadalajara was the hard road. Miroslav Koubek, at 74, the oldest manager at the 2026 tournament, was hired in December 2025 with the country already in the playoff bracket after finishing runners-up in UEFA qualifying Group L behind Croatia. In the Path D semi-final, they trailed the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Prague before pulling level and advancing 4-3 on penalties. Five days later, a 2-2 draw with Denmark was followed by another shootout win, 3-1. Two games, two shootouts, one World Cup place.

This is Czech Republic's first World Cup since 2006, ending a 20-year absence from the tournament. Koubek has had exactly two competitive matches in charge, both won by penalty shootout. His system is straightforward: a 3-4-2-1 built on compactness, direct delivery into the box and an aerial threat from Patrik Schick and Tomas Soucek. Schick, the Bayer Leverkusen striker, has 25 international goals in 52 caps and scored five times in qualifying. Soucek, with 89 caps, shields the defensive shape and arrives late for headers. Lyon's Pavel Sulc, who managed 21 goal contributions in Ligue 1 this season, will look to link play between the lines.

South Korea came through their two pre-tournament friendlies without injury concerns, though Cho Yu-min was replaced in the training camp by uncapped Cho Wi-je after picking up a knock. Czech Republic also reported no injury issues during pre-World Cup preparations, with Adam Hlozek recovering from a long-term injury to make the squad. Koubek's side are at full strength.

Team news for South Korea v Czech Republic

South Korea: No major injury concerns ahead of matchday one. Cho Yu-min was withdrawn during the training camp with a knock and replaced by uncapped Cho Wi-je, but the rest of Hong Myung-bo's squad is available. Son Heung-min captains the side and is fit. Kim Min-jae leads the defensive line. Hong is expected to use a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 shape.

Czech Republic: Miroslav Koubek has a fully fit squad available. Adam Hlozek returned from a long-term injury in time to make the travelling party, giving Koubek an extra creative option. Matej Kovar is expected in goal, with Ladislav Krejci captaining the side from a back-three. Patrik Schick leads the attack.

Predicted line-ups for South Korea v Czech Republic

Hong Myung-bo is likely to set up in a three-at-the-back shape, using the wing-backs to push high and funnelling play through Son and Lee Kang-in behind the striker. Koubek's 3-4-2-1 mirrors the same structural logic on the other side: Coufal and Jurasek as the wide outlets, Soucek and Krejci as the physical spine, with Schick as the aerial focal point.

South Korea: Kim Seung-gyu; Lee Ki-hyeok, Kim Min-jae, Lee Han-beom; Seol Young-woo, Hwang In-beom, Paik Seung-ho, Lee Tae-seok; Lee Kang-in, Son Heung-min; Hwang Hee-chan

Czech Republic: Kovar; Holes, Krejci, Zima; Coufal, Soucek, Sadilek, Jurasek; Sulc, Provod; Schick

match result: south korea to win

South Korea have the clearer attacking quality. Son, Lee Kang-in and Hwang Hee-chan represent a level of pace and technique that a Koubek side, assembled in December and tested in only two competitive matches, will struggle to contain across 90 minutes at altitude. Czech Republic's set-piece delivery through Coufal and Jurasek is a genuine threat, and Kim Min-jae will need to be sharp in the air. If Czechia earn enough dead balls in dangerous areas, a 1-1 draw is absolutely in play. On balance, the talent difference in attack is sufficient to back South Korea, narrowly, to take all three points.

TIP 01✓ Hit

Correct Score: 2-1

Both managers favour pragmatic defensive setups, but the attacking quality is sufficient on both sides to produce a goal each. South Korea's press and Son's movement should generate two, while Czech Republic's set-piece delivery through Coufal and Soucek's late runs create a credible threat for one at the other end. A narrow 2-1 home win is the most likely result given the form and personnel on show.

TIP 02✗ Miss

Over 2.5 Goals: Under

Czech Republic's game model is built on compactness and direct play rather than expansive attacking football; their playoff ties each ended 2-2 with goals spread across 120 minutes. South Korea's March 2026 friendlies produced goalless attacking displays against Austria and Ivory Coast. Both sides will be cautious in a tournament opener with enormous group-stage consequence. Under 2.5 goals is the sensible lean.

TIP 03✓ Hit

Both Teams to Score: Yes

Czech Republic's set-piece threat is the most reliable weapon Koubek has, Coufal and Jurasek delivering from wide positions with Krejci and Soucek arriving late. South Korea have been hurt by this type of delivery before. Even if Korea take the lead, Czech Republic have the aerial quality and the dead-ball deliverers to score on the counter or from a set piece. Both teams finding the net is the expected outcome.

TIP 04✗ Miss

Anytime Goalscorer: Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min enters his fourth World Cup with 56 international goals in 141 caps and three goals during AFC qualifying. Hong's system is built to release him on transitions, and Czech Republic's defensive wingbacks leave space behind them when the play opens. Son is South Korea's primary set-piece and open-play threat. At 2.75, the price reflects fair value on the most likely scorer in this fixture.

TIP 05✓ Hit

Double Chance: Home or Draw

South Korea are the likelier winners given their individual quality and established World Cup pedigree against a side that needed two penalty shootouts and a brand-new manager to qualify. Czech Republic's tactical resilience makes an outright away win the least likely outcome. Home or Draw covers South Korea edging this or the tight 1-1 scenario that both tactical setups could produce, at a level of confidence backed by the squad quality differential.

Match Result
11/10

South Korea carry the superior attacking quality, Son, Lee Kang-in and Hwang Hee-chan against a Czech back three that has had minimal time together under Koubek. This is the anchor leg: a South Korea win is the most likely single outcome, and it underpins the builder by narrowing the result range from which the other legs operate.

Both Teams to Score
9/10

Czech Republic's aerial threat from set pieces means even a South Korea win does not guarantee a clean sheet. This leg sits alongside the Match Result leg without being correlated: Korea can win 2-1 with both teams scoring, which is also our correct score prediction. It adds value without relying on a clean sheet outcome from a Korean defence that conceded four in a single friendly this March.

Son Heung-min
✗ Miss
Anytime Goalscorer
7/4

A Son goal complements both the Home Win and BTTS legs without introducing correlation problems. If Korea win and both teams score, Son is the most likely name on the scoresheet. His 56 international goals in 141 caps and three qualifying goals make him the standout selection, and the bet builder price reflects an appealing combined return across three mutually reinforcing outcomes.
