Coventry and Sunderland sit 19th and 20th in the Premier League, separated by one point, and a draw at the Coventry Building Society Arena looks the likeliest outcome.

Coventry v Sunderland preview

Saturday's game is the sort neither side can afford to lose, and neither has shown it can win. Coventry are 19th with six points from eight games, Sunderland are bottom with five, and the table has little patience for either.

Coventry's season has swung between extremes. They beat Newcastle 4-1 at home on 12 October, then lost 3-1 at Tottenham a week later and 1-0 at home to Fulham last Saturday. Sunderland arrive after a 0-0 draw with Leeds, their first point in four games, and the first time they have kept a clean sheet since the home win over Fulham on 30 August.

The visitors are also still waiting for a first away win of the campaign.

Coventry's problem is the goals column

Coventry have scored six goals in eight league games, an average of 0.75, and four of those came in the one match against Newcastle. Strip that out and they have mustered two goals in seven.

At home they have won one of four and lost three, conceding 8 and scoring 4. They have failed to score in three of those four. Their last home game against Fulham ended 1-0 to the visitors, and before that came a 5-0 defeat by Brighton on 13 September.

Their recent-form numbers back that up. Coventry average 0.73 expected goals per game and concede 1.27, and they have only 37.1% of the ball on average. They are not dominating games, and the table reflects it.

Sunderland's away form is the concern

Sunderland have lost three of their four away games and drawn the other, conceding 10 goals at 2.5 per match. The 5-3 defeat at Manchester City on 20 September accounts for five of them, but they also lost 2-0 at Bournemouth on 18 October without scoring.

They have scored six in eight, the same total as Coventry, and have lost five league games. Their home form has been steadier: two clean sheets in four, with just four conceded. The trouble is that they have scored only once at the Stadium of Light in the league this season.

The visitors are slight favourites with bet365 despite sitting bottom, which says more about Coventry's home record than Sunderland's travels.

Form guide ahead of Coventry v Sunderland

Coventry have won two, drawn none and lost six of their eight league games, and four of those defeats have come in a row at the start of the run. Sunderland have won one, drawn two and lost five, with their only victory a 1-0 home win over Fulham. On raw results Sunderland are marginally the better side, with two draws to Coventry's none. Yet Coventry's two wins came against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, and the 4-1 win shows what they can do when it clicks. Sunderland have scored more than one goal in a league game only once, in the 3-5 defeat at City. Form favours neither side, and that is why the margins here look so thin.

Stats for Coventry v Sunderland

  • Coventry and Sunderland have met 10 times in the last 10 meetings in the data: Coventry have won four, Sunderland one and five have been draws.
  • The last meeting was a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Stadium of Light on 13 May 2025, in the Championship play-off semi-final second leg. Sunderland had won the first leg 2-1 at Coventry.
  • Coventry have won one of their four home league games this season and failed to score in three of them.
  • Sunderland have not won away from home in the league in 2026/27: three defeats and one draw, with 10 goals conceded in four games.
  • Coventry have lost six of their eight league games. Sunderland have lost five, drawn two and won one.

Coventry v Sunderland in the Premier League table

Coventry are 19th on six points from eight games, with a goal difference of -9. Sunderland are 20th on five points from eight, with a goal difference of -8. Nottingham Forest are 18th on six points, level with Coventry, and Crystal Palace and Manchester United are both on seven in 16th and 17th. Seventeenth place is a single point away for Coventry and two away for Sunderland.

Nobody has a game in hand, so this is a straight six-pointer. A Coventry win would lift them to nine points and into the safety places, while leaving Sunderland four adrift of 17th at best. A Sunderland win would take them to eight and ahead of Coventry. A draw leaves both stuck where they are, with Forest and Palace the next sides to benefit.

Head-to-head record: Coventry v Sunderland

The last 10 meetings have produced four Coventry wins, five draws and one Sunderland win. They average 2.3 goals per game. Both teams have scored in six of the ten (60%) and over 2.5 goals has landed in five (50%). The most recent meeting was a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Stadium of Light on 13 May 2025, which gave Sunderland a 3-2 aggregate win in the Championship play-off semi-final.

All of those games were in the Championship, and neither side looks like the one that played them. Five draws in ten tells us these two are hard to separate, and the current numbers agree. The goals line is a coin toss on history, but the 2026/27 season figures lean under: Coventry have gone over 2.5 goals in four of eight, Sunderland in two of eight. A low-scoring draw fits both the record and the form.

Where this fixture is won and lost

The biggest gap is possession. Sunderland average 48.8% in their last eight league games and Coventry only 37.1%, so Coventry will probably defend deep and look to break. Sunderland also have the edge in shots on target (3.75 per game against 3.13) and expected goals for (0.86 against 0.73).

The defensive numbers cut the other way for Coventry. They concede 1.27 expected goals per game, which is better than Sunderland's 1.70, even though their real goals-against average is higher. Their 15 conceded is a poor return that the underlying numbers do not fully explain.

Corners will be low. Coventry average 3.75 for and 4.75 against, Sunderland 4.13 for and 3.88 against. Neither side creates much, which suggests a scrappy contest.

Where to watch Coventry v Sunderland: TV and online streams

Kick-off is at 3pm (15:00 GMT) on Saturday 31 October. The game is not shown live on TV or streaming in the UK because it falls inside the Saturday 3pm blackout. Highlights will be on Match of the Day, and we will have a live blog covering the match.

Coventry v Sunderland betting tips

The strongest angle is the low-scoring draw. Neither side has scored more than three in a league game this season, and both have failed to score in at least four of their eight. Under 2.5 goals and a draw sit together naturally, and the bet builder below leans on that. The risk is that Coventry's defence is thin and Sunderland have conceded at least twice in five of eight.

Our headline tip✗ Miss
Match result

The draw

Two sides with five defeats or more each, one point apart and short of goals. Coventry have drawn none of eight and Sunderland two, so the draw is the outcome neither has been able to find yet, which is why it looks undervalued here. Nothing in the data separates them enough to back a winner.

Our predicted scoreCoventry 1–1 Sunderland
✗ Prediction missed
TIP 01 · Correct score✗ Miss

Correct score 1-1

Five of the last ten meetings between these sides ended level, including the last one, 1-1 at the Stadium of Light on 13 May 2025. Both teams have scored in 6 of the 10 meetings, and each side averages 0.75 goals per game this season. One goal each is the likeliest single scoreline. It is a long shot by nature, since any single score is.

TIP 02 · Over 2.5 goals✗ Miss

Under 2.5 goals

Coventry have gone over 2.5 goals in four of eight league games and Sunderland in two of eight, and each side averages 0.75 goals scored. Sunderland have kept two clean sheets and Coventry one. Under 2.5 is the sensible side. The risk is Coventry's defence, which has conceded 15.

TIP 03 · Both teams to score✓ Hit

Both teams to score

Both teams have scored in 60% of the last 10 meetings, and Sunderland's matches have had both sides score in three of eight. Coventry have conceded in seven of eight games and Sunderland in six of eight, so goals at the back are likely. The risk is that both sides have failed to score often, Coventry in five of eight.

TIP 04 · Anytime goalscorer✓ Hit

Awoniyi to score

Awoniyi leads the line for a Coventry side that has scored four goals in four home games, against a Sunderland defence that has conceded 14 in eight. He will take most of the chances Coventry create from their counter-attacks. The risk is that Coventry create few, with 3.13 shots on target per game.

TIP 05 · Double chance✓ Hit

Coventry or the draw

Coventry have lost seven of their last ten home meetings with... no, the data shows they have won four of the last ten against Sunderland and drawn five, so they have avoided defeat in nine of ten. Sunderland have not won away in the league this season, with three defeats and a draw. Home or draw covers the draw and the home win. The caveat is Coventry's own home record of one win in four.

Under 2.5 goals
✗ Miss
Over 2.5 goals
-

Under 2.5 is the base of the builder, reflecting two sides that average 0.75 goals each. It sits well with a one-goal-each scoreline or a narrow win, and does not conflict with the other two legs.

Both teams to score
✓ Hit
Both teams to score
-

Both teams to score still fits under 2.5 goals through 1-1 or 2-1 results. Coventry have conceded in seven of eight and Sunderland in six of eight, so one goal each is the natural reading of this leg alongside the under.

Awoniyi to score
✓ Hit
Anytime goalscorer
-

Awoniyi to score gives the builder a Coventry goal, which fits both teams to score. One Coventry goal is all this leg needs, so it works with under 2.5 and does not rely on Coventry winning.
