Chelsea's route to the final was built almost entirely against lower-league opposition. They opened their campaign with a 5-1 win at Charlton Athletic in the third round, Pedro Neto then scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 fourth-round victory over Hull City. Wrexham made it uncomfortable in the fifth round, Chelsea needed extra time to win 4-2, before a 7-0 demolition of League One Port Vale in the quarter-finals. The semi-final was altogether tighter: Enzo Fernández's first-half header beat Leeds United 1-0, with McFarlane's men holding firm through sustained pressure in the second half. That win, in McFarlane's first match as interim manager, booked Chelsea's place in a 17th FA Cup final, more than any club bar Manchester United (22) and Arsenal (21).

City's path was appreciably more ruthless for the most part. They opened with a 10-1 demolition of Exeter City, beat Salford City 2-0 in the fourth round, then won 3-1 against Newcastle. The quarter-final saw Erling Haaland score a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Liverpool. The semi-final was the one wobble: Championship side Southampton led 1-0 with ten minutes remaining before Jérémy Doku equalised and Nico González struck a late winner to send City through 2-1. It was the kind of comeback that City under Guardiola have made routine, but Chelsea will have noted that this side can be rattled.

Guardiola made six changes for City's 3-0 midweek win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League, deliberately resting Haaland, Doku and Rayan Cherki ahead of Saturday. All three are expected to return. McFarlane has no such luxury. Chelsea have not won a Premier League game since March, their winless top-flight run stretching to seven games, and the cup has been the one arena where they have looked like themselves. With no league position to protect, McFarlane will name his strongest available XI, though what that looks like depends heavily on a series of late fitness calls.

Guardiola, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, was characteristically candid about the turnaround time his side have had to manage. "Chelsea have been home all week preparing the final," he said. "We have to travel to London, and they will be at home. That is fatigue and fatigue and fatigue. McFarlane deployed Marc Cucurella in an advanced left-sided role against Liverpool at Anfield to good effect, and with wingers Garnacho and Neto both facing fitness tests, a similar arrangement is possible. Reece James is expected to return at right-back. City revert to their strongest XI after rotating in midweek, with Haaland, Doku and Cherki all back from the start.
