Celta Vigo v Juventus: Europa League preview
Celta Vigo face an early test of their Europa League campaign when they host Juventus on Thursday night in matchday two of the league stage.
The Spaniards lost their opener. Juventus won theirs by five clear goals and sit top of the table on three points with a goal difference of plus five.
Only the top eight sides in the 36-team league phase go straight into the last 16, so a second game without points would leave Celta with plenty to do.
Celta Vigo
JuventusHow they got here
Celta opened with a 1-0 defeat away to Omonia Nicosia on 16 September. They failed to score despite 19 shots, five of them on target, and an expected goals figure of 1.17. Omonia scored in the final 15 minutes. Celta also had 12 corners to their opponents' three and 54% of the ball.
Juventus beat NEC Nijmegen 5-0 at home on 17 September. The goals came evenly spread, one in each of the 0-15, 16-30, 31-45, 61-75 and 76-90 minute bands, and one was a penalty. They had 48% of possession and seven shots on target from 11 attempts. It was a clean sheet and the biggest win of the opening round for them.
That is a small sample for both sides, but the contrast is clear. Celta created plenty and had nothing to show for it. Juventus were ruthless.
Rotation and selection
Neither side has a league fixture detail in our data to suggest a rotation problem, so both should field strong elevens. Celta cannot afford another slow start in a competition where every point counts. Juventus will want to back up their opening win with a first away result.
Celta lined up in a 3-4-1-2 on matchday one and Juventus in a 3-4-2-1. Expect both to stick with those shapes, with changes forced mainly by injuries in the Celta squad.
