Canada v Morocco prediction, lineups & tips: World Cup 2026 round of 16
Canada make history at NRG Stadium on 4 July, taking on Morocco in their first-ever World Cup last-16 tie. We preview the match, with lineups, team news, stats and a betting tip.
Canada walk into the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 on Saturday having never been here before. The co-hosts squeezed through Group B in second place, needing Stephen Eustaquio's late winner against South Africa to book their place in the last 16 for the first time in the country's history. Waiting for them at NRG Stadium in Houston is a Morocco side that has been to this stage before and done considerably more damage, the Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals in Qatar in 2022, and they arrive here having just knocked out the Netherlands on penalties in a bruising contest in Monterrey.
Canada
MoroccoCanada finished Group B with four points, winning two and losing one, their sole defeat a 2-1 reverse against Switzerland. The group opener, a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, showed some vulnerability. Then came the 6-0 demolition of Qatar, which was the pick of their results and briefly made Canada look like potential dark horses. The Switzerland loss brought them back to earth. Jesse Marsch's side scrambled through with a 1-0 win over South Africa, with Alphonso Davies coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes in his first competitive appearance since March 2025, after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Marsch was measured in his pre-match press conference, refusing to frame this fixture as revenge for the 2022 group-stage defeat. "I don't believe that in this life or in this sport you can rely on the idea of revenge," the Canada head coach said. "Our focus is on preparing appropriately for the opponent we will face."
Morocco come into this on a three-match winning run in the World Cup, having drawn their opener 1-1 with Brazil before winning each of their remaining group games. They beat Scotland 1-0 and then defeated Haiti 4-2 before the Netherlands test. That 1-1 draw after extra time, Morocco equalised through Issa Diop's stoppage-time header after Cody Gakpo had put the Dutch ahead, ended in a 3-2 penalty shootout win, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saving the decisive kick from Crysencio Summerville. Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi reserved particular praise for Canada. "Canada is a very difficult team; we must be at our best," he said ahead of Saturday's game, describing them as "one of the tournament's strongest teams" for their tactical discipline.
Ouahbi also addressed questions about Brahim Diaz, who has yet to replicate his Africa Cup of Nations form. "It is true he has not reached his AFCON level, but I don't only judge him by goals or assists," Ouahbi said. "He has played a lot, he has already provided two decisive assists, and I hope he scores goals in this World Cup."
Canada
MoroccoCanada have averaged 2.25 goals scored per game at this World Cup while conceding just 0.75 per game. Their expected goals against figure of 0.6 per match points to a backline that is genuinely difficult to break down. Morocco, however, have averaged 1.75 goals per game in open play and carry a particular threat from wide, with Achraf Hakimi bombing forward from right-back. The Atlas Lions also have Ismael Saibari in fine form, it was he who scored the winning penalty in Monterrey, and Marsch has openly acknowledged the challenge, describing Morocco as "a well-organised team with incredible individual talents."
Canada have used a 4-4-2 formation for all four of their World Cup matches and Marsch is unlikely to deviate here. Davies, now fit, should start at left-back. Morocco line up in their customary 4-2-3-1, with Hakimi at right-back and Sofyan Amrabat expected to anchor the midfield alongside Azzedine Ounahi. Whether Hakim Ziyech or Saibari lines up behind the striker remains the one tactical question for Ouahbi.
