Australia v Egypt prediction, lineups & tips: Socceroos seek historic first knockout win

Australia have never won a World Cup knockout match. That statistic has stalked the Socceroos through every tournament appearance, and it follows them into AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Friday night as they face Egypt in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. Tony Popovic's side ground their way out of Group D with four points, but without the two players who might have offered the most going forward. After sealing qualification, Popovic said: "We've seen already how many big nations have not gone through. It's the World Cup, it's difficult. You play different styles from different countries."

The double injury loss changes the shape of Australia's attacking options materially. Leckie, at his fourth World Cup, was the Socceroos' most experienced forward before his hamstring gave way against the USA. Italiano, the right-back, injured his adductor in training. Neither will play again in this tournament. Popovic will need someone else to provide the threat on the break that Leckie gave. Nestory Irankunda, 19, is the name most linked to that role.

Egypt have their own injury concern: Hamdi Fathy is ruled out with a muscle bruise. But Salah is fit, and that is the dominant factor. The Liverpool forward's movement, directness and goal threat on either side of his stronger right foot will ask questions of Australia's defensive unit that no other opposition player in this tournament has managed. Australia's right flank, where Aziz Behich operates at left-back, will face its sternest examination.
