Manchester City arrive at Villa Park with a perfect record

Manchester City have played seven Premier League games this season and won the lot. They sit top on 21 points, 13 clear of an Aston Villa side in 12th, and they arrive at Villa Park for the day's early kick-off.

Villa have a decent recent record against them, though. They won 2-1 at the Etihad on 24 May and 1-0 at Villa Park in October 2025. Beating the league leaders again would be a big turnaround for a side that has lost three of its opening seven.

Enzo Maresca's team has not dropped a point yet. The Villa manager spoke to the media on Friday afternoon and will need his side to be far sharper than they have been at home so far.

Villa searching for home form

Villa have won two, drawn two and lost three of their seven league games. Home form is the problem. They have taken one point from three games at Villa Park, scoring three and conceding five. They lost 1-2 to Nottingham Forest on 12 September and 0-1 to Arsenal on 31 August.

The response has been better on the road. They won 3-2 at Tottenham and 1-0 at Newcastle last Saturday, and they drew 2-2 with Brentford at home on 10 October. Those results came either side of a 0-4 loss at Brighton in August.

Goals are an issue. Villa average 1.0 per game and have failed to score in three of seven. They have scored more than two goals in only one league game. That is the trouble against a side averaging 2.7 goals.

City's only worry is at the back at home

City have scored in every league game, with an average of 2.7 and 19 goals in total. They also beat Ipswich 3-2 last Saturday at the Etihad, so they are not infallible.

The defence has been far sturdier on the road. City have conceded one goal in three away games and have kept clean sheets at Liverpool (3-0) and Manchester United (1-0). They beat Crystal Palace 4-1 away on 28 August.

The visitors have no league defeat to hide behind, and that is the motivation. Every side in the division is now trying to be the one to end the run, and Villa's home record does not suggest it will be them.

Form guide ahead of Aston Villa v Manchester City

City's last seven league games read seven wins, no draws, no defeats. Villa's read two wins, two draws and three defeats, and their results over the same period include a 0-4 loss at Brighton and a 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal. Surface form points firmly one way. The one caveat is that Villa's last two games have brought a win at Newcastle and a 2-2 draw with Brentford, and they have scored in both. City also conceded twice against Ipswich and three times against Sunderland, so goals at both ends are possible.

Stats for Aston Villa v Manchester City

  • City have won all seven Premier League games in 2026/27, scoring 19 and conceding 7.
  • Villa have taken one point from three home league games this season, scoring three and conceding five.
  • Villa won the last two meetings: 2-1 at the Etihad on 24 May 2026 and 1-0 at Villa Park on 26 October 2025.
  • Eight of the last ten meetings featured both teams scoring, and seven produced three goals or more.

Aston Villa v Manchester City in the Premier League table

City top the table on 21 points from seven games, three clear of Arsenal in second (18). Brighton are third on 16. Even a defeat would leave Maresca's side top, so the stakes are about momentum rather than position.

Villa are 12th on eight points from seven games, level with Newcastle and two behind Brentford, Leeds and Everton in the places above them, who each have 10. Fulham in 18th have five, so the cushion above the bottom three is three points. A win would lift Villa into the top half. A defeat would leave them looking over their shoulder with a goal difference of minus four.

Head-to-head record: Aston Villa v Manchester City

The last ten meetings have produced nine decisive results and one draw, with an average of three goals per game. Both teams scored in eight of the ten (80%) and seven went over 2.5 goals (70%). The latest was Villa's 2-1 win at the Etihad on 24 May 2026. Before that, they won 1-0 at Villa Park on 26 October 2025, City won 2-1 at the Etihad in April 2025, Villa won 2-1 at Villa Park in December 2024, and City won 4-1 in April 2024.

Villa have won three of the last five and the games have rarely been dull. That favours goals markets, with both teams to score and over 2.5 the obvious lean. The caveat is that this Villa side is not the one from those meetings. They average one goal a game this season and have scored more than twice only once, so the home side's contribution is the question rather than City's.

Where this fixture is won and lost

The gap in the numbers is wide. City average 64.6% possession to Villa's 47.6%, and their expected goals figure is 2.19 per game against Villa's 1.21. City also put 5.29 shots on target per game away from a 3.14 average for Villa.

The defensive picture is closer than the table suggests. City concede 1.0 per game overall, with an expected figure of 1.41, while Villa concede 1.57 with an expected 1.62. City have also allowed six goals in four home games, so they are not airtight. Villa's route is quick transitions on a side that dominates the ball. Their chances will be limited, though, if they cannot hold possession for more than half the game.

Predicted line-ups for Aston Villa v Manchester City

Both sides have used a 4-2-3-1 in all seven league games. Villa are without three players and have a doubt in midfield.

Manchester City: Donnarumma; Lewis, Dias, Guehi, Ait-Nouri; Fernandez, Anderson; Doku, Foden, Cherki; Haaland

match result: manchester city to win

City have won seven from seven, average 2.7 goals a game and have conceded once in three away matches. Villa have taken one point from three home league games and average one goal per game. The visitors should edge a game that Villa will not make easy, given their record against City in the last two meetings.

Correct Score: 1-2

City have scored in all seven league games and Villa have scored in four of seven. Eight of the last ten meetings saw both teams score. A 1-2 away win fits both patterns and is priced at 7/1. The risk is a bigger City win, as Villa have conceded 11 in seven.

TIP 02

Over 2.5 Goals: Over

Seven of the last ten meetings went over 2.5 goals and the average is three per game. City have gone over 2.5 in five of seven this season. The risk is Villa's own games, where only four of seven have cleared 2.5. At 1/2 it is short but sound.

TIP 03

Both Teams to Score: Yes

Both teams have scored in eight of the last ten meetings, a rate of 80%. Villa have scored in four of seven this season, and City have conceded in four of seven. Failing to score at Villa Park is the risk, and Villa have done that in one of three home games. The price is 4/7.

Double Chance: Away or Draw

City are unbeaten in 2026/27 and have conceded only once in three away games. Villa have lost two of three at home, with a 0-1 defeat to Arsenal and a 1-2 loss to Forest. The 1/7 price offers little on its own but is a useful cover. The risk is that Villa beat them again, as they did in May.
