Harry Kane: Bayern Munich striker ‘proud’ to beat goals records but suffers injury in Bundesliga

England captain Harry Kane said he was “proud” to beat the record for the most goals in a debut individual Bundesliga season by scoring his 31st of the campaign with Bayern Munich to help the reigning champions win at bottom side Darmstadt.

The runaway top scorer in Germany set up Jamal Musiala’s 36th-minute equaliser and headed in following Joshua Kimmich’s fine wing play as part of a 5-2 win.

Uwe Seeler had held the record of 30 goals in a first individual Bundesliga season, setting the total with Hamburg in 1963/64.

“Proud to break a Bundesliga record – but, more importantly, another good win,” Kane wrote on Twitter minutes after the full-time whistle.

Darmstadt had gone ahead through Tim Skarke but Musiala scored his second and was joined on the scoresheet by Serge Gnabry and Mathys Tel during the second half, with Oscar Vilhelmsson adding a late consolation for the hosts in added time.

Kane was substituted after colliding with a post eight minutes from time and can now reflect on a record of being directly involved in 40 Bundesliga goals in 26 games, contributing nine assists.

Bayern will hope Kane’s injury has no impact on his involvement in their Uefa Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal, which begins with the first leg at Emirates Stadium on April 9.

The 30-year-old twice scored 30 goals in a Premier League season for his only previous club – the Gunners’ arch-rivals, Tottenham.

Die Roten have eight league matches left in which to try to overhaul a seven-point deficit on leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who have a game in hand.

Leverkusen follow up their last-gasp Uefa Europa League win over Qarabag by visiting Freiburg in the league on Sunday.

Fellow Champions League quarter-finalists Borussia Dortmund visit Bayern in their next Bundesliga fixture on March 30.

Kane has 11 goals in their last 10 matches in all competitions, as well as three assists in his two most recent appearances.
