Reigning Premier League top scorer Erling Haaland has called Phil Foden “truly incredible” after his Manchester City teammate won the men’s player of the year honour at the PFA Awards 2024.

England international Foden scored 19 goals in 35 top-flight appearances to help City win the sixth Premier League title of his career before he turned 24 in May.

“Foden is just a great person,” striker Haaland told FotMob, via Championat. “It’s a pleasure to play in the same team with him and exchange jokes.

“Phil is truly incredible. Nobody sees what he does in training, but that’s also fantastic. I consider myself lucky to have played with him.”

Haaland PFA Awards

Haaland was also shortlisted after scoring 27 times in 31 games to ensure he has been the leading marksman in England in each of his two seasons with City.

Cityzens midfielder Rodri, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer – signed from City before the 2023-24 season – Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins were also in contention.

“To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for,” said Foden.

“To be recognised this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“I also want to pay special thanks to [manager] Pep Guardiola, the City coaches and all my teammates as they help me to try and get better every single day.”

PFA winner Foden ‘supreme’

“I’d also like congratulate Kyle, Rodrigo and Erling on being voted into the PFA Team of the Year as it’s great to see their amazing quality recognised in such a way,” said Foden.

“Last season was another very special one for everyone at the club, but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term.”

City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said Foden “embodies everything we stand for”. “He is a supremely talented player but is someone who always strives to seek to improve and he is a very humble guy who is hugely popular throughout the club,” he added.
