Sweden midfielder Kristoffer Olsson is no longer on a ventilator and has moved to a neurological centre for “months” of rehabilitation after suffering from brain blood clots, club side Midtjylland have announced.

Former Arsenal player Olsson was taken to hospital when he lost consciousness at home last month, with tests showing he had “extremely rare inflammation in the vessels of the brain”.

The 28-year-old, who is yet to recover motor functioning or verbal abilities, has been transferred to a treatment centre in the Danish town of Hammel which specialises in advanced rehabilitation of neurological disorders, where he will receive “targeted treatment and support”.

Superliga club Midtjylland thanked staff at Aarhus University Hospital for their “dedicated and highly professional” treatment of Kristoffer, calling the support he had received alongside his family “of inestimable importance”.

Olsson first joined Midtjylland on loan from Arsenal, where he was a youth product and made one senior appearance, in 2014.

The move was made permanent and he remained at the club until 2017, leaving for AIK and later playing for Krasnodar and Anderlecht.

Midtjylland re-signed Olsson from the Belgian club in 2022. He made his Sweden debut in 2018 and has won 46 caps.

Speaking ahead of the national team’s friendlies against Portugal and Albania next week, manager Jon Dahl Tomasson called Olsson’s ordeal “terrible”.

“We will inform the players later today, via the doctor,” he said. “I think the players will do something for Kristoffer. All positive steps are positive.”
