Arsenal injury news: Gabriel withdraws from Brazil squad

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has withdrawn from the Brazil squad for their friendlies against England and Spain due to injury.

Gabriel has enjoyed a terrific campaign for Arsenal, who sit top of the Premier League table with 10 games remaining due to their goal difference advantage over Liverpool.

Gabriel has played in 26 of Arsenal’s 28 league games this season, with Mikel Arteta’s Gunners conceding a league-low 26 goals.

He was due to link up with Dorival Junior’s Selecao squad for two high-profile friendlies this month, with Brazil taking on England at Wembley Stadium before travelling to Madrid to face Spain.

However, on Monday the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the 26-year-old had withdrawn from the squad with an unspecified injury, to be replaced by Juventus’ Bremer.

Gabriel only made his senior international debut last September, scoring his first goal for Brazil in October’s draw with Venezuela. He has won six caps for the Selecao in total.

Arsenal team-mate Gabriel Martinelli had already withdrawn from Brazil’s squad after sustaining a foot injury in a 6-0 win over Sheffield United earlier this month, which has caused him to miss the Gunners’ last two games.

Arteta will be desperate to have Gabriel available for Arsenal’s first game after the international break, as they go to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City on March 31.

The Gunners then face Luton Town and Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League before hosting Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
