Bayern v Dortmund result ‘inexplicable’, Kimmich says as Kane goals stall

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has said the Bundesliga holders’ performance in their 2-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund was “like a friendly” and “inexplicable” after Thomas Tuchel’s side fell 13 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Karim Adeyemi put Dortmund on their way to a first Klassiker victory since 2019 after 10 minutes and Julian Ryerson sealed victory seven minutes from time before Harry Kane had a goal ruled out with a minute remaining.

“I wonder how we can put in such a performance in a game like this,” said Kimmich, speaking to Sky Sport Germany, via Bayern & Germany.

“It’s completely inexplicable to me. It’s completely incomprehensible. In the second half, you had the feeling that nothing was at stake. It was like a friendly game.”

Bayern had 61% of possession but only two of the seven shots on target as they failed to match Leverkusen’s 2-1 victory at home to Hoffenheim earlier in the day.

Xabi Alonso’s side extinguished Bayern’s hopes of gaining ground by equalising through Robert Andrich with two minutes remaining and scoring a 91st-minute winner courtesy of Patrik Schick.

With seven matches of the campaign remaining for the top two, Leverkusen – who were boosted by Alonso announcing on Friday that he will stay at the club next season – need a maximum of three three wins to become champions.

Die Roten had scored 16 times across three wins before the international break but Thomas Tuchel’s final season in charge is now almost certain to hinge on their fortunes in the Uefa Champions League.

The six-time European champions visit Arsenal on April 9 in the first leg of their quarter-final, by which time Kane will hope to be back among the goals after scoring six times and setting up a further three in Bayern’s three matches before their defeat to Dortmund.

Kane missed both of England’s friendlies this month with an injury he sustained late in Bayern’s 5-2 win at Darmstadt on March 16.

Tuchel’s team are next in action when they visit midtable Heidenheim, who are winless in six matches, on April 6.

“We players should go home and question ourselves,” said Kimmich. “If we play like this, it will be difficult next week and in the Champions League.”
