Newcastle United have suffered a major blow with the news that defender Sven Botman could be sidelined for nine months after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Botman was substituted late on after hurting his knee as Newcastle suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
The Netherlands centre-back underwent scans this week, and Newcastle have now revealed he is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an ACL injury.

A statement issued by the club read: “Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City.
“Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday’s match and he is expected to return to action within six to nine months.
“The Dutch centre-back initially sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan – a decision which saw him return to action in December.
Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City.
A scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL and he is expected to return within 6-9 months.

The news represents another low in what has largely been a miserable season for Newcastle.
Eddie Howe’s side sit 10th in the Premier League table and are fighting for Europa League qualification, having clinched a surprise top-four finish last season.
The Magpies have been hampered by selection issues all campaign, with Nick Pope, Joelinton and Callum Wilson all currently sidelined.
Sandro Tonali is serving a 10-month ban after breaching gambling rules while under contract with former club Milan, while Joe Willock, Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes have also missed lengthy periods due to injury.
Botman missed 17 games – including five of Newcastle’s six Champions League group-stage matches – with his last knee injury, with the club opting against sending him for surgery.
