‘We’ll have City tops on’ – McGinn backing Guardiola’s men to beat Spurs

John McGinn admits he will have a Manchester City top on tonight when they take on Tottenham in the Premier League.

Aston Villa came from behind to draw 3-3 with Liverpool at Villa Park on Monday to move them a step closer to securing Champions League football for the first time since 1983.

It was a classic top-flight battle between two good teams and the result means Spurs cannot afford to drop points in their final two fixtures if they want to overtake Unai Emery’s men.

They welcome Pep Guardiola and City to North London knowing a win would also put the title in rivals Arsenal’s hands.

On top of this, City are yet to win in the league at Tottenham’s new stadium since it opened in 2019, although they did record their maiden victory in the FA Cup earlier this season.

But McGinn is hoping Erling Haaland and Co can get the job done and confirm Villa’s place in Europe’s top competition.

He said: “There’s some of us that have never been close to the Champions League in our life.

“The manager [Unai Emery] has a no-excuse mentality. People have written us off and we’ve floated under the radar.

“We’ll have our Man City tops on [on Tuesday]. Big Jhon [Duran] is a bit nuts at times, he’s a nightmare to play against.

“It was a brilliant effort towards the end. We got a bit of luck. It’s been a tough few weeks with lads coming back and playing through the pain barrier.”

Villa have been excellent under Emery this term and were tipped as potential Premier League title contenders earlier in the campaign.

The demands of Europe combined with a relatively small squad that has suffered key injuries means they fell away from the top three, but are deserving of that all-important fourth place.

Regardless of Spurs’ results, Villa know a win away at Crystal Palace on the final day will guarantee them a spot at the top table.
