UEFA may increase Euro 2024 squad sizes after Southgate, Koeman comments

UEFA could yet allow teams to name 26-man squads for Euro 2024 after a number of international coaches criticised the decision to reduce squad sizes.

Due to the risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic, UEFA allowed teams to name 26-man squads for the delayed Euro 2020 three years ago, though matchday squads could still only contain 23 players.

FIFA continued the practice of permitting 26-man squads at the 2022 World Cup, though this summer’s tournament was expected to see a return to 23-man parties.

However, with many sides facing mounting injury lists, a number of coaches have suggested bigger squads should be permitted.

England boss Gareth Southgate has advocated for 26-man squads to be allowed, while the Netherlands’ Ronald Koeman described the decision to move back to 23-man lists as “absurd”.

However, UEFA could reverse that move if enough coaches speak out in favour of doing so at a meeting in Dusseldorf next month.

In a statement issued on Thursday, UEFA said: “We have taken note of comments expressed by some national team coaches on the squad size for Euro 2024.

“A workshop with the participating teams will be held on 8 April and on that occasion UEFA will listen to the views of the coaches.

“Any ideas in this respect will then be considered and assessed.”
