Harry Kane scored his 40th club goal of the season in all competitions with a free-kick as Uefa Champions League semi-finalists Bayern Munich thrashed Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

England captain Kane struck from distance on the stroke of half-time as part of a 5-1 away win to cap a memorable week for Bayern, whose 1-0 home win over Arsenal on Wednesday gave them a 3-2 win on aggregate in the last eight of the Champions League.

Leon Goretzka put Bayern ahead in the 30th minute with a fierce shot and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer kept them level by saving Robin Gosens’ volley 11 minutes later.

Kane, who had a long-range shot saved by Frederik Ronnow four minutes into a game, then doubled the lead for Thomas Tuchel’s team with his sixth league goal in six games.

Thomas Muller smashed in from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s pass eight minutes after the break, joined on the scoresheet by Mathys Tel after the forward collected Kane’s pass nine minutes later.

Muller headed his second two minutes later and Yorbe Vertessen struck for Union a minute into added time.

Harry Kane Bayern stats

England captain Kane has 33 Bundesliga goals in his maiden year in the division and requires eight more in four games to equal Robert Lewandowski’s single-season record of 41.

Bayern are in a race to finish second, with Bayer Leverkusen already champions and Stuttgart three points behind them with a game more to play.

Stuttgart visit 12th-placed Werder Bremen on Sunday, travel to Leverkusen on April 27 and host Bayern on May 4.

Kane’s assist takes him to 53 direct goal involvements in 41 appearances in all competitions.

Of the 19 teams the 30-year-old has faced this season, he has only failed to score against Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Defeat left Union three points clear of Mainz in the relegation play-off place, having played a game more.
